December is altijd weer een maand om naar uit te kijken. Niet alleen vanwege sinterklaas, kerst en de jaarwisseling, maar zeker ook vanwege de jaarlijstjes. Elk jaar gebeurd het wel weer dat ik een paar films over het hoofd heb gezien. "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was daar één van. En terecht dat deze film in de jaarlijstjes terug te vinden is.
Scott Pilgrim is een 23 jarige jongen die naast zijn werkloze bestaan bas speelt in de band "Sex Bob-Omb". Sinds kort heeft hij weer een vriendin, de 17 jarige Chinese Knives Chau, die door iedereen in zijn omgeving wordt afgekeurd vanwege haar leeftijd. Alles lijkt goed te gaan, totdat hij een droom krijgt over de vrouw van zijn leven. Tot zijn schrik komt hij haar de volgende dag tegen en wordt hij op slag tot over zijn oren verliefd op haar. Scott doet zijn uiterste best om een date met Ramona Flowers, zoals ze heet, te krijgen. Dit gaat echter niet zomaar. Om haar hart te kunnen winnen zal Scott moeten vechten tegen "De zeven kwaadaardige exen" van Ramona.
Deze film is gebaseerd op de comicbook serie Scott Pilgrim, geschreven door de Canadees Bryan Lee O'Malley. Al vanaf de openings-theme van Universal is duidelijk dat het niet een gewone comicbook-verfilming is, maar zeker ook een ode aan videogames en de Nintendo-generatie. Edgar Wright, regisseur van onder meer "Shaun of the Dead" en "Hot Fuzz", Is er zeer in geslaagd om deze sfeer over te brengen op de kijker. Het tempo van de film ligt hoog. We switchen van droom naar realiteit en weer terug. Terecht één van de betere films van 2010.

December is always a month to look forward to. Not only because of Santa Claus, Christmas and New Year, but also because of the year lists. Every year it happenes again. There are always a few films that I have missed. "Scott Pilgrim vs.. the World" was one of them. And this is definitely a movie that should be on those lists.
Scott Pilgrim is a 23 year old boy who is in between jobs and plays bass in the band "Sex Bob-Omb. Recently he has another girlfriend, a 17 year old Chinese girl named Knives Chau, which everyone around him rejects because of her age. Everything seems to go well until he dreams about the love of his life. To his shock he meets her the next day and immediately falls in love with her. Scott tries to get a date with the girl, who's name is Ramona Flowers. However, in order to win her heart Scott will have to fight "the seven evil exes" of Ramona.
This film is based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series, written by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley. Since the opening theme for Universal it is clearly not an ordinary comic book adaptation, but also definitely a tribute to video games and the Nintendo generation. Edgar Wright, director of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" has been very successful in bringing the sphere across to the viewer. The pace of the film is high. We switch from dream to reality and back again. Rightly one of the better films of 2010.

Win/Win (2010)

Win/Win speelt zich af op de werkvloer van een grote amerikaanse investeringsbank in het business-center van Amsterdam. De 24-jarige Ivan werkt als assistent analist. Hier en daar laat hij een memo met verkoopadviezen achter. In de lift, op een computerscherm, op het toilet. Wanneer trader Stef hem ontdekt en hem onder zijn hoede neemt, komt zijn carrière in een stroomversnelling. Al snel weet hij zijn talent waar te maken en hoort hij bij de grote jongens. Ineens heeft receptioniste Deniz, die hij al enige tijd observeerde, ook oog voor hem.
Ivan weet maar moeilijk raad met zijn nieuwe status als trader. Zijn mede-traders nemen hem meteen op in de groep, maar hij ziet meteen de oppervlakkigheid. Hij krijgt een appartement, die groot, steriel en leeg is. Hij worstelt met de kick en verslaving van het traden. Hij leeft om te werken. Ivan probeert vrienden te worden met Paul, een Koreaans talent. De vriendschap lijkt erg ongemakkelijk. Waarschijnlijk omdat een van hen wint en de ander verliest.
Regisseur Jaap van Heusden heeft uitgebreid onderzoek gedaan naar het leven als trader. Dit is duidelijk terug te zien in de film. Het script zit doorspekt met vakjargon. De decors voelen echt aan. De hardheid van het bedrijfsleven komt duidelijk over op de kijker. De cinematografie is ook prachtig. Er zit een aantal schitterende shots in. Bijvoorbeeld Ivan op de hinkelbaan en al wandelend hoor de stad. Win/Win is een fascinerende film, of je nou iets hebt met de economische sector of niet. Nederland heeft is weer een talentvolle filmmaker rijker.

Win / Win is set in a large American investment bank in the business center of Amsterdam. The 24-year old Ivan works as an assistant analyst. Here and there he leaves behind a note with sell recommendations. In the elevator, on a computer screen, on the toilet. When he is discovered by trader Stef, his career takes big leap forward. He manages his true talent and he abides among the big traders. Deniz, the receptionist whom he he has fancied for some time suddenly also fancies him.
Ivan does not quite know how to cope with his new status as a trader. His fellow-traders include him in the group, but he immediately sees how superficial they are. He gets his own flat, a large, sterile and empty room. He struggles with the addiction and the thrill of trading. He lives to work. Ivan tries to become friends with Paul, a Korean talent. The friendship seems very uncomfortable. Probably because one of them is winning and the other is losing.
Director Jaap van Heusden has done extensive research into life as a trader. This is clearly reflects in the film. The script is peppered with jargon. The scenes feel real. The hardness of the business is clear to the viewer. The cinematography is beautiful. There's some great shots. For example Ivan doing some hopscotch and his walks in the city. Win / Win is a fascinating film, whether you have affinity with the economic sector or not. The Netherlands is another talented filmmaker richer.

The American (2010)

Control, het debuut van Corbijn, was een artistiek, fotografisch en film-technisch hoogstandje. Bij het nieuws over een nieuwe Corbijn film had ik dan ook grote verwachtingen. Met George Clooney in de hoofdrol en een titel The American lijkt Corbijn een stap richting hollywood te willen maken. De film heeft duidelijk een minder artistiek gehalte dan de biografische film Control.
Jack (George Clooney) moet na een mislukte klus als huurmoordenaar uitwijken naar Italië, waar hij contact opneemt met zijn opdrachtgever Pavel. In afwachting van een nieuwe klus duikt Jack onder in een klein Italiaans dorpje. Het afwachten duurt echter vrij lang en na enige tijd bouwt hij enkele vriendschappen (de plaatselijke priester en Clare) op in het dorp. Na enige tijd krijgt hij de opdracht om een wapen te bouwen voor Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Jack besluit (mede door de gesprekken met de priester en Clara) dat dit zijn laatste klus is.
Anton Corbijn weet ons weer schitterende beelden voor te schotelen. Fotografisch is The American wederom een prachtige film. Helaas gaat het in film niet alleen om beelden. Het verhaal miste voornamelijk diepgang. Het verhaal kabbelde enigszins voort en het karakter van Jack kwam niet goed uit de verf. Wel moet gezegd worden dat de gesprekken tussen Jack en de priester boeiend waren. Tijdens de film vroeg ik mij af of Anton Corbijn (Zoon van een dominee) ook dergelijke gesprekken zou hebben gehad met zijn vader. Een van de hoogtepunten was voor mij het acteren van Thekla Reuten. The American is een redelijk geslaagde film geworden, maar geen hoogtepunt.

Corbijn's debut movie Control, was an artistic, photographic and film technical masterpiece. When i heard the news that Corbijn was making a new movie, I had high expectation. With George Clooney in the lead role and a title 'The American', Corbijn takes a big step towards Hollywood. The film clearly has a less artistic content than the biopic Control.
After an unsuccessful job as a mercenary in Sweden, Jack (George Clooney) moves to Italy, where contacts his boss Pavel. Pending a new job, Jack lays low in a small Italian village. In the meanwhile he meets some new people, the local priest and Clara (an attractive young woman). After a while he gets a job to build a weapon for Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Jack decides (partly through conversations with the priest and Clara) that this will be his last job.
Anton Corbijn again brings us some very beautiful pictures. The American, Photographic, is another wonderful film. Unfortunately, images are not the only elements in movie. The story lacks some depth. The story slightly goes on and the character of Jack is somehow a bit flat. Though I must say that the conversations between Jack and the priest were fascinating. During the film I wondered whether Anton Corbijn (Son of a pastor) also would have had such conversations with his father. One of the highlights is the acting of Thekla Reuten. The American has become a reasonably successful movie but no winner.

Vision - Aus dem Leben der Hildegard von Bingen (2009)

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was een Duitse Benedictijnse abdis, die naast wetenschapster, dichteres, theologe en componiste vanaf haar 43e claimde visioenen te zien. Deze liet zij opschrijven, wat resulteerde in verschillende boeken.
Margarethe von Trotta heeft zo goed mogelijk getracht om haar leven in beeld te brengen. Hildegard werd als jong meisje samen met Jutta groot gebracht in het klooster. Na een paar sprongen gaat het verhaal verder op het moment dat ze abdis wordt. Een paar jaar later zal ze haar eerste visioenen krijgen. Wat volgt is de strijd die Hildegard von Bingen moest leveren tegen de veelal mannelijke machtsorde uit die tijd.
Het lastige van een biopic zijn altijd weer de keuzes die gemaakt moeten worden wat betreft het verhaal. Trotta heeft in dit geval gekozen om voornamelijk haar visioenen het verhaal te laten vertellen. Zo nu en dan worden er uitstapjes gemaakt naar haar andere expertises, zoals componeren en plantkunde. de regisseuse heeft hier helaas geen duidelijke keuzes in gemaakt, waardoor de film soms wat rommelig overkomt en misschien wel wat oppervlakkig lijkt. Hetgeen afbreuk doet aan de visionaire, intelligente vrouw die zij was.
Het camerawerk was over het algemeen vrij solide, op een aantal wat rommelige scènes na. Het acteerwerk van met name Barbara Sukowa (Hildegard von Bingen) en Hanna Herzsprung (Richardis von Stade) waren prima. Al met al een aardig kostuum-drama, die echter te weinig vertelt over wie Hildegard von Bingen nou écht was.

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, alongside being a scientist, poet, theologian and composer she claimed to see visions, starting when she was 43. Those visions were written down and resulted in several books.
Margarethe von Trotta has tried her best to bring her life into pictures. Hildegard was raised as a young girl in the monastery. After a few jumps on the story she becomes abbess. A few years later she has her first visions. What follows is the struggle that Hildegard von Bingen had to deliver against the mostly male power order of the time.
The problem with biopics are always the choices that must be made regarding the story. Trotta has opted in this case primarily for her visions to tell the story. Occasionally trips are made to her other expertise, such as composing and botany. The director has unfortunately no clear choices, which makes the film somewhat messy and maybe even superficially. Which affect the visionary, intelligent woman she was.
The camera work was generally solid, apart from a few messy shots. The acting, especially Barbara Sukowa (Hildegard von Bingen) and Hannah Herzsprung (Richardis von Stade) were fine. All in all a nice costume drama, but too little talk about who Hildegard von Bingen really was.

Mitt liv som hund (My Life as a Dog, 1985)

Soms kom je een film tegen in de winkel die meteen tot je spreekt. Soms is het een film waarvan je weet dat je die ooit nog eens moet gaan kijken, soms blijkt het een pareltje onder het stof te zijn. Dit laatste is voor mij hier het geval. De regisseur Lasse Halström kennen we vooral van films als "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Chocolate" en "Dear John". Hier betreft het een oudere film, uit 1985, in het zweeds.
Ingemar is een twaalf-jarige jongen die samen met zijn broer en moeder woont in een klein Zweeds dorpje. Zijn moeder is ernstig ziek en is daardoor niet in staat voor de beide jongens te zorgen. Ingemar moet daarom bij zijn oom en tante gaan wonen. Zijn hond waar hij erg dol op is mag echter niet mee.
Tijdens zijn verblijf bij oom en tante raakt hij bevriend met Saga, een meisje dat erg goed kan voetballen en boxen. Hij heeft het erg naar zijn zin bij zijn oom en tante, maar mist ook zijn moeder en hond erg.
"My Life as a Dog" is een bijzondere beeldvertolking vanuit de ogen van een twaalfjarige jongen. De vergelijking tussen de hond Laika, die de ruimte ingestuurd is met Russische astronauten, en zijn eigen leven is prachtig in het verhaal verweven. Het regiewerk van Lasse Halström is prima. De film bevat een aantal prachtige camerastandpunten. Daarnaast is het acteerwerk van Anton Glanzelius en Melinda Kinnaman (gezien hun jonge leeftijd) ook erg goed. Gelukkig is deze vergeten parel weer onder het stof vandaan gekomen.

Sometimes you find a dvd in a store that speaks right to you. Sometimes it's a movie that you know of, but still need to watch, sometimes it turns out to be a jewel among the dust. The latter is the case here for me. Lasse Halström mostly known from films such as "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Chocolate" and "Dear John"is the director. This concerns an older movie from 1985, in Swedish.
Ingemar is a twelve year old boy who lives with his brother and mother in a small Swedish village. His mother is seriously ill and therefore unable to care for two boys. Ingemar therefore must live with his uncle and aunt. His dog which he is very fond of them can not come.
During his stay with uncle and aunt, he becomes friends with Saga, a girl who is very good at playing football and boxing. He really likes being with his uncle and aunt, but misses his mother and dog bad.
"My Life As A Dog" is a special image interpretation told from the perspective of a twelve year old boy. The comparison between the dog Laika, who was sent into space with Russian astronauts, and his life is beautifully woven into the story. Lasse Halström did a great job as a driector. The film contains some great camera angles. In addition, the acting of the Anton Glanzelius and Melinda Kinnaman is very good (considering their age). Fortunately, this forgotten jewel is rediscovered.

Inception (2010)

Dat Christopher Nolan films kan maken, dat was bekend. Met films als The Dark Knight, Batman Begins en Memento heeft hij laten zien een van de beste regisseurs van het moment te zijn. De vraag was echter of hij het weer voor elkaar zou krijgen een film van een dergelijk hoog niveau te brengen.
Op de poster prijkt 'Your mind is the scene of the crime'. En dat is precies waar de film over gaat. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is een meester als het gaat om creëren van droomwerelden en het daaruit stelen van andermans ideeën. Door mensen in een kunstmatig diepe slaap te brengen weet hij met zijn onderbewustzijn door te dringen in hun dromen.
Op een gegeven moment wordt hij benaderd om in plaats van een idee te stelen een idee bij iemand te planten. Dom besluit de bijna onmogelijke opdracht aan te nemen. Hij stelt een team van experts samen voor deze operatie. Naast dit team gaat ook de opdrachtgever Saito mee.
Dromen hebben nooit een duidelijk begin. Vandaar dat Nolan regelmatig midden in een scène begint. Hierdoor is niet altijd even duidelijk als kijker of je in een droom of in realiteit zit. In feite is Inception niet moeilijk te volgen, zolang je goed je kop erbij houdt.
Christopher Nolan heeft met Inception weer een film van formaat op zijn naam geschreven. Een film vol interessante ideeën, verassende wendingen en flitsende actie scènes. Van begin tot eind weet de film je te blijven boeien.

I guess that nobody will question by now that Christopher Nolan is a great director. With films like The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Memento, he showed to be one of the best directors at the moment. The question was whether he would continue to make a movie that good.
The poster says: "Your mind is the scene of the crime." And that is precisely what the film is about. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a master when it comes to creating dream worlds and stealing other people's ideas from their dreams. By putting people in a deep artificial sleep he goes into their dreams with his subconscious.
At one moment he was approached to insert an idea instead of stealing an idea. Dom decides to take the almost impossible task. He puts a team of experts together for this operation. Saito, his client is also there to supervise.
Dreams never have a definite beginning. That's why Nolan regularly started shooting in the middle of a scene. It is not always clear for the viewers whether you're in a dream or reality. Inception in fact is not difficult to follow, as long as you keep track.
Christopher Nolan did it again. Inception is an outstanding movie. A film full of interesting ideas, surprising twists, flashy action scenes, good acting and a great story. From beginning to end the movie to stays interesting.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2010)

Met Wes Anderson aan het roer weet je nooit wat je moet verwachten. Het is altijd weer een feest om een van zijn films te mogen zien. Of het nou gaat om The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou of The Darjeeling Limited. Het zijn allemaal bijzondere excentrieke films vol grappige details en droge humor. Fantastic Mr. Fox is wat dit betreft een beetje de vreemde eend in de bijt. Het betreft hier namelijk een "Stop-Motion" adaptatie van het Roald Dahl Boek 'De Fantastische Meneer Vos'. Met onder andere George Clooney, Meryl Streep en Bill Murray die de stemmen verzorgen, mag je wel spreken van een supersterren ensemble.
We pakken het verhaal van Mr. Fox op wanneer hij het leven roven achter zich laat. Hij beloofd zijn vrouw nooit meer voedsel te gaan stelen bij de boeren in de buurt en besluit te gaan werken bij de plaatselijke krant. Maar na 12 jaar begint het allemaal weer te kriebelen en besluit hij in het geheim het roven weer op te pakken. Hij beroofd echter de verkeerde boeren, namelijk Boggis, Bunce en Bean, die wraak willen nemen. Meneer Fox en zijn familie graven zich in om uit de handen van de boeren te blijven. Boggis, Bunce en Bean zijn echter vast besloten. Zoals in veel van Wes Anderson's films gaat het ook in deze film weer om de relatie tussen vader en zoon. Ash probeert zich voortdurend te bewijzen voor zijn vader, maar deze heeft meer oog voor zijn neefje Kristofferson.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is een prachtige animatiefilm die zowel op artistiek vlak als inhoudelijk een prima niveau weet te halen. Terecht dan ook dat de film een Oscar-nominatie kreeg voor beste animatie film. Leuk detail is dat het jasje van Mr. Fox gemaakt is van een oude colbert van regisseur Wes Anderson.

With Wes Anderson you never know what to expect. It's always a treat to see one of his films. Whether it is The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or The Darjeeling Limited, they are all special eccentric films full of funny details and dry humor. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a "Stop Motion" adaptation of the Roald Dahl book 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox'. In That way it this movie is somehow different. With George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray on voices, you may speak of an superstars ensemble.
We tackle the story of Mr. Fox when he leaves his life of stealing behind. He promised his wife never to steal food from the farmers in the neighborhood again and decides to work with the local newspaper. But after 12 years the desire and thrill of stealing comes back and he secretly decides to start robbing again. However, he robbed the wrong farmers, namely Boggis, Bunce and Bean, who want to take revenge. Mr. Fox and his family dig themselves in, to stay out of the hands of the farmers. Boggis, Bunce and Bean are determined to get back on Mr. Fox and his family. As in many of Wes Anderson's film is also in this movie about the relationship between father and son. Ash constantly tries to prove himself to his father, but he takes more notice of his nephew Kristofferson.
Mr. Fantastic. Fox is a wonderful animated film that is both artistically and subject matter-wise on a good level. Therefore, the movie rightly received an Oscar nomination for best animated film. Nice detail is that the jacket of Mr. Fox was made from an old jacket from director Wes Anderson.

Micmacs à Tire-larigot (2009)

Het was al weer even geleden dat we voor het laatst een nieuwe film mochten bekijken van deze wonderlijke regisseur, want dat is hij. Met films als Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain en Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles op zijn naam mogen we met recht spreken van een bijzondere filmkunstenaar. Ook Micmacs past in ditzelfde genre. Alles wijst hierop; Het oog voor detail, de sepia kleuren, de bizarre toevalligheden, mooie close-ups, excentriciteit, hilariteit en emotie. Alle elementen zijn weer verwerkt in deze film.
Jaren geleden is Bazil's vader omgekomen tijdens het onschadelijk maken van een mijn. Zijn moeder kan het niet meer aan en Bazil groeit op in een weeshuis. Jaren later werkt Bazil in een videotheek waar hij op een gegeven moment ooggetuige is van een afrekening in het criminele circuit. Door bizarre toeval wordt hij in het hoofd getroffen door een afgeketste kogel en raakt in coma. Eenmaal ontwaakt blijkt zijn hele leven veranderd. Zijn appartement is verhuurd aan iemand anders, zijn bezittingen zijn allemaal zo goed als weg en zijn baan is ook inmiddels aan iemand anders vergeven. Er zit niets anders op dan op straat te gaan leven. Hier ontmoet hij een aantal anderen die een zelfde soort bestaan leven. Een groep die leeft van wat zij op straat vinden. Sterker nog het wordt zijn familie. Samen met hen besluit hij wraak te nemen op de wapenfabrikanten die zijn leven dwars zitten. Ze zetten een briljant plan op om beide wapenfabrikanten tegen elkaar uit te spelen.
Jeunet heeft laten zien dat hij met al zijn elementen elke keer weer een bijzondere film neer te zetten. Hoewel het niet van het zelfde niveau is als Amelie en Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles is het nog steeds een prachtige film.

It had been a while since we last were able to watch a new movie made by this wonderful director, because that's what he is. With films such as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain and Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles, we can speak of a very special film artist. Micmac also fits in this same genre. Everything points to this, the attention to detail, the sepia color, the bizarre coincidences, nice close-ups, eccentricity, laughter and emotion. All elements are again incorporated into this film.
Years ago, Bazil's father died while defusing a mine. His mother couldn't take it anymore, so Bazil grew up in an orphanage. Years later, while working in a video store Bazil is a witness of a assassination in the criminal world. By bizarre coincidence, he was hit in the head by a bounced bullet and slips into a coma. Once awakened, his life is changed. His apartment is rented to someone else, his belongings are all almost all gone and his job is given to someone else. There is no other choice than to live on the streets. Here he meets a number of others who live a similar existence. It's a group who lives from what they find in the streets. They become his family. Together with them, he decides to take revenge on the arms manufacturers who have made his life so miserable. They set up a brilliant plan to play both arms manufacturers out against each other.
Jeunet has shown that he is able to make another very special movie with all the elements without making it look like another movie in the same genre. Although not the same level as Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles and Amelie the this is still a beautiful film.

Al vanaf de eerste minuten is duidelijk dat Fish Tank een sociaal-realistisch drama is. Een rauwe film vol emotie, uit het leven gegrepen. Naast regisseurs als Ken Loach en Shane Maedows kan ik nog een Britse regisseur toevoegen aan dit genre.
Mia is een meisje van 15 die met haar 11 jarige zusje Tyler woont in een klein flatje in een grauwe arbeiderswijk in Essex. Ze is agressief, verstoten door haar vriendinnen, net van school afgestuurd en doet de hele dag niet veel meer dan dansen en rondlopen in de stad. Het is haar droom om professioneel danseres te worden. Hun moeder, een instabiele vrouw, drinkt veel en schenkt totaal geen aandacht aan haar gezin. Ze laat haar kinderen aan hun lot over en leeft haar eigen leven. Er lijkt echter een kanteling te komen in hun leven wanneer hun moeder een nieuwe vriend Connor mee naar huis heeft genomen. Naast de aandacht die hij geeft aan moeder Joanne geeft hij ook de kinderen de aandacht die zij zo hard nodig hebben. Mia is erg blij met alle aandacht die Connor haar schenkt en lijkt zich tot hem aangetrokken te voelen. Niets is echter wat het lijkt. Als een zeepbel lijken haar dromen uiteen te spatten.
Een dik compliment mag gegeven worden voor de acteer prestatie van Katie Jarvis. Deze is zeer geloofwaardig. De keuze voor Katie als hoofdpersoon mag een bijzondere genoemd worden. Ze werd ontdekt toen ze ruzie maakte met haar vriend. Op dat moment was ze net van school gestuurd en had ze geen werk. Het personage wat ze hier speelde ligt dus niet ver van haar eigen leven vandaan. Het camerawerk is rauw, maar ook erg mooi. We volgen Mia de hele film door. Deze manier van filmen doet enigszins documentaire-achtig aan. Dit geeft een heel realistisch beeld. Arnold levert met Fish Tank is een prachtig rauw sociaal-realistisch drama af die zeker niet af doet voor het werk van Loach.

From the first minutes Fishtank is clear that this movie is a social-realistic drama. A movie raw, emotional and realistic. Just like the directors Ken Loach and Shane Maedows I can add another British to this genre.
Mia is a 15 year old girl who lives with her 11 year old sister Tyler in a small apartment in a gray working class area of Essex. She is aggressive, rejected by her friends and is just expelled from school The only thing she does is all day dance and walk around the city. It is her dream to become a professional dancer.
Their mother is an unstable woman who drinks a lot and pays absolutely no attention to her family. She leaves her children to their fate and lives her own life. There seems to be a tilt in their lives when their mother takes a new friend Connor home.
Not only does he care for their mother Joanne, he also gives the children the attention they so desperately need. Mia is very happy with all the attention it gives Connor and seems to feel attracted to him. But nothing is what it seems. Her bubble of dreams is about to burs.
A thick compliment can be given for the acting performance of Katie Jarvis. This is very credible. The choice of Katie as a main character may be called surprising. She was discovered while she was fighting with her boyfriend. At that time, she was expelled from school and she had no work. The character which she is playing is not far away from her own life. The cinematography is raw but beautiful. We follow Mia through the whole movie. This way of filming almost seems to have a documentary texture and seems to be very realistic. Arnold delivers a beautiful raw social-realistic drama with Fish Tank and is certainly not less than the work of Ken Loach.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

Al sinds de zomer van 2009 keek ik al uit naar deze film. Niet alleen omdat de regie in handen was van Spike Jonze (Regisseur van Being John Malkovic en Adaptation), maar vooral vanwege de wonderschone, fantasierijke trailer die mij meteen meenam in het avontuur van Max. Al snel begreep ik dat het hier ging om een verfilming van een prentenboek gemaakt door Maurice Sendak.
Max is een 9-jarig jongetje vol kattenkwaad. In eerste instantie lijkt hij een echte wildebras, die avontuur zoekt, maar als snel blijkt dat hierachter een heel gevoelige Max zit. Hij voelt zich niet begrepen door zowel zijn zus als zijn moeder. Als hij op een gegeven moment ruzie krijgt met zijn moeder, rent hij weg. Hij vlucht naar zijn fantasiewereld. Hij ontmoet daar de "Wild Things". Harige grote monsters, die zijn gevoelens symboliseren. Ze zijn kwetsbaar, eenzaam, depressief, bang, gevoelig, maar ook behulpzaam, vriendelijk, liefdevol en meelevend. Max wordt in deze fantasie wereld dus indirect geconfronteerd met zijn eigen gevoel.
Omdat het prentenboek slechts 10 zinnen bevat, moest er een compleet nieuw script geschreven worden. Dave Eggers en Spike Jonze zijn hier zeker in geslaagd. Het verhaal lijkt in eerste instantie oppervlakkig, maar is dit geenszins. Met name de karakters van de monsters zijn prachtig uitgebalanceerd. De rol van Max lijkt hem op het lijf geschreven. Niet alleen heet hij in het echte leven ook Max, in de film is hij Max! Ook de cast voor de stemmen mag er zijn. Deze zijn zorgvuldig uitgekozen. De Soundtrack is eveneens fenomenaal en blijft nog dagenlang in de hoofd zitten.
"Where the Wild Things Are" is een prachtige fantasierijke metaforische vertelling die niet alleen kinderen zal aanspreken, maar ook zeker de harten van volwassenen zal stelen.

Since the summer of 2009 I looked forward to this film. Not only because the movie is directed by Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovic and Adaptation), but mainly because of the wonderfully imaginative trailer that took me straight into the adventure of Max. Soon I understood that this film was based on the picture book by Maurice Sendak.
Max is a 9 year old boy full of mischief. At first he seems a real tomboy, who is always looking for adventure, but soon you discover that behind all this is very sensitive boy. He feels misunderstood by both his sister and his mother. At one point he gets into a fight with his mother and he runs away. He flees to his fantasy world. There he meets "The Wild Things". Big hairy monsters, which symbolize his feelings. They are vulnerable, lonely, depressed, frightened, vulnerable, but also helpful, friendly, loving and caring. Max is indirectly being confronted with his own feelings in this fantasy world.
Because the picture book only contains 10 sentences, there was a completely new script written. Dave Eggers and Spike Jonze have certainly succeeded. The story seems to be superficial, but is by no means. In particular, the characters of the Monsters are beautifully balanced. The role of Max seems to him like a glove. Not only is his name in real life Max, in the film he is Max! The cast,of the voices are very well selected and fit beautifully. The Soundtrack is also phenomenal and continued for days in my head.
"Where the Wild Things Are" is a wonderful imaginative metaphorical tale that will not only appeal to children, but certainly will steal the hearts of adults too.

Un Prophete (2009)

Al sinds de lovende kritiek van het afgelopen filmfestival in Cannes zag ik er al naar uit om deze film te gaan zien. Vorige week was het dan zo ver. Een ding was vanaf het begin van de film al duidelijk. De lovende kritiek was terecht.
Un Prophete vertelt het verhaal van de naïeve 19-jarige analfabeet Malik El Djebena. Hij is veroordeeld tot zes jaar in de gevangenis. Al snel krijgt hij te maken met het harde rauwe gevangenisleven. Een leven van geweld, corruptie en hiërarchie. Malik komt onder de hoede van César Luciano, leider van de Corsicaanse maffia. Malik leert snel en klimt steeds verder op binnen de organisatie die Luciano heeft weten op te bouwen in de gevangenis. Daarnaast weet hij ook het vertrouwen van hem te winnen. Hij maakt van dit alles dan ook gebruik van om voor zichzelf ook een organisatie op te zetten. Wat volgt is een indrukwekkende machtsstrijd tussen de twee.
Un Prophete is een zeer geslaagde film die tussen een gevangenisdrama en een maffiafilm inhangt. Naast zeer goede regiewerk van Audiard verdient zeker Tahar Rahim veel lof. Hij draagt vrijwel de hele film alleen en doet dit overtuigend. Maar ook zeker het acteerwerk van Niels Arestrup is formidabel. Dat de film inmiddels al met prijzen is overladen lijkt mij niet meer dan terecht. Un Prophete heeft alles in zich om een klassieker te worden.

Since the praising reviews at the film festival in Cannes last year, I was already looking forward to go and see this movie. Last week I had the opportunity. One thing was clear from the beginning of the film. The movie was rightly praised.
Un Prophete tells the story of the naive, illiterate 19-year old Malik El Djebena . He was sentenced to six years in prison. From day one he gets to know the raw hard life in prison. A life of violence, corruption and hierarchy. Malik is under the care of Cesar Luciano, leader of the Corsican Mafia. Malik learns quickly and climbs ever further within the organization that Luciano was able to build in prison. Besides he gains his confidence. He uses all of this for himself to set up an organization an organization on his own. What follows is an impressive power struggle between the two.
Un Prophete is a very well made film that lingers between a prison drama and a mafia movie. Besides the very good job of director Audiard, actor Tahar Rahim deserves much praise. He bears almost the entire movie on his own and this is very convincing. But certainly the acting of Niels Arestrup is also formidable. That the film has already been overloaded with prices seems only right. Un Prophete has everything in it to become a classic.

Precious (2009)

Na een zit van een krappe twee uur is het enige waar ik naar verlang... rust. Niet dat de film zo heftig is in de zin van actie, maar het verhaal des te meer. Precious is een meisje van zestien die net als al haar leeftijdgenoten haar dromen heeft, zingen, op de cover van een magazine staan, noem maar op. Maar de waarheid is anders. Precious heeft ernstig overgewicht en wordt structureel misbruikt door haar vader, die net een tweede kind bij haar heeft verwekt. Ze wordt mishandelt en onderdrukt door haar moeder die leeft van een uitkering en niets anders doet dan voor de tv hangen. Daar bovenop komt nog dat Precious (die analfabeet is) zojuist van school is gestuurd.
Haar leven lijkt echter te veranderen wanneer Precious de kans krijgt naar een alternatieve school te gaan. Hier komt ze onder de hoede van Ms. Rain. Een geduldige lerares met een groot hart. Precious laat zich door al haar tegenslagen niet uit het veld slaan en besluit te werken aan haar toekomst, maar dit gaat zeker niet zonder slag of stoot.
De op het boek "Push" gebaseerde film Precious is een indrukwekkend drama wat nog enige tijd blijft nadreunen. Dit is niet alleen te wijten aan het sterke verhaal, maar ook zeker aan de sterke acteerprestaties van met name Gabourey Sidibe en Mo'Nique.

After sitting almost two hours watching the thing i desire most is ... rest. Not that the film has that much action, but the story is a heavy subject. Precious is a girl of sixteen who, like its peers has her dreams, singing on the cover of a magazine stand, you name it. But the truth is different. Precious is obese and is structurally abused by her father. She is for the second time pregnant of his child. She is being abused and oppressed by her mother who lives on social care benefit and does nothing apart from watching TV. On top of that Precious (who is illiterate) has just been expelled from school.
Her life seems to change when the opportunity rises for Precious to go to an alternative school. Here she attends the classes of Ms. Rain. A patient teacher with a big heart for teaching and young people. Although her journey is long and full of pain, darkness and other obstacles she is determent to work on her future and that of her children.
Precious is based on the book "Push". It is an impressive piece of drama which makes you think a lot. Not only the story is very strong, also the performances of especially Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique are amazing.

A Serious Man

Ik heb nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken dat de Coen brothers tot mijn favoriete regisseurs behoren. Niet zo zeer omdat het regiewerk zo baanbrekend is, maar meer omdat hun films altijd weer voor anderhalf uur hilarische momenten zorgt. A Serious Man, anders als de titel ons doet geloven, is daar geen uitzondering op.
Larry Gopnik is een Joodse Natuurkunde docent. Hij is getrouwd en heeft 2 kinderen. Het leven gaat zijn gangetje en alles lijkt normaal te zijn, maar niets is wat het lijkt. Zoals in het nummer Somebody To Love van Jefferson Airplane (When the truth is found to be lies). Zijn vrouw heeft een affaire met een goede vriend en wil van hem scheiden. Zijn zoon denkt alleen maar aan zich zelf en is volop aan het experimenteren met drugs. Zijn broer woont bij hun in huis omdat hij problemen heeft. En tot overmaat van ramp probeert een student hem nog te chanteren ook. Hij doet zijn best om een serieuze man te zijn, maar leven lijkt te eindigen in een grote puinhoop. In zijn zoektocht naar waarom hem dit alles heeft gebeurd zoekt hij de hulp in van zijn plaatselijke rabbi's. A Serious man is een opeenstapeling van hilarische zwarte humor met een knipoog naar de Joodse wortels van de regisseurs.
Met A Serious Man hebben de Coen broers weer een prima komedie afgeleverd. Niet veel op aan te merken, maar ook niet veel over te vertellen.

I've never concealed that the Coen brothers are amongst my favorite directors. Not because of groundbreaking work in directing, but more because their films are always hilarious. A Serious Man, otherwise than the title makes us believe, is no exception.
Larry Gopnik is a Jewish Physics teacher. He is married and has 2 children. Life goes on as usual and everything seems to be normal, but nothing is what it seems. As stated in the song Somebody To Love by Jefferson Airplane (When the truth is found to be lies). His wife is having an affair with a good friend and wants to divorce from him. His son is selfish, spends his money and is experimenting with drugs. His brother lives in their house because he has problems. And finally there is a student who tries to blackmail him. He does his best to be a serious man, but his life seems to end in a big mess. In his search for why everything is going this way he seeks the help of his local rabbis. A Serious Man is an accumulation of hilarious black humor with a nod to the Jewish roots of the directors.
With A Serious Man, the Coen brothers again delivered an excellent comedy. Not much to be praised, but not much to tell. Just plain good.

Efter Brylluppet (2006)

After The Wedding zoals de Engelse vertaling van deze film luidt, is van de hand van regisseur Susanna Bier. De Deense regisseur is onder andere bekend van de film Brothers, waarvan momenteel een Amerikaanse remake in de bioscopen draait. Maar ook kunnen we haar kennen als een van de Regisseurs die een film maakte volgens het Dogme95 manifest. Bier lijkt In Efter Bryllupet duidelijk beïnvloed te zijn door deze manier van filmen en heeft ook hier gekozen voor een aantal elementen uit het manifest.

Jacob Petersen is hulpverlener in India. Hij runt samen met de plaatselijke bevolking een weeshuis. Wanneer het weeshuis door schulden lijkt te moeten sluiten, komt er blijkt een Deense zakenman Jørgen een groot geldbedrag te willen investeren. Jacob zal hiervoor echter wel naar Denemarken moeten terugkeren om dit persoonlijk te regelen.
Eenmaal in Denemarken aangekomen lijkt hij Jacob niet zomaar de donatie te willen overhandigen. Ter plekke komen er nieuwe voorwaarden boven tafel. Zo wordt hij verzocht deel te nemen aan de bruiloft van zijn dochter. Deze bruiloft blijkt een keerpunt in zijn leven. Een kruising waar hij belangrijke keuzes zal moeten maken. Wellicht zelfs de moeilijkste keuze van zijn leven.
Efter Brylluppet is een complex familiedrama vol emoties. Het scenario (geschreven door Anders Thomas Jensen, regisseur van o.a. Adam's Aples) is een goed gelaagd verhaal die langzaamaan ontrafeld wordt. Het acteerwerk van zowel Mads Mikelsen als Rolf Lassgård is van buitengewone klasse. Het camerawerk is zoals eerder al genoemd duidelijk beïnvloed door het Dogme95 manifest. Zo is er veelvuldig gebruik gemaakt van een handheld camera, wat een goede keuze is, omdat het de dialogen versterkt. Al met al een prima film.

After The Wedding is the international title for this movie from of director Susanna Bier. The Danish director is also known for the film Brothers, of which an American remake is currently in the theaters. But we also know her as one of the Directors who made a film with the Dogme95 manifest. In Efter Bryllupet Bier seems to be clearly influenced by this way of filming and has again opted for a number of elements written in the manifest.

Jacob Petersen is welfare worker in India. He runs an orphanage with the local population. When the orphanage is near closing by debt, a Danish businessman Jørgen is interested to invest a large sum of moneyt. Jacob however has to return to Denmark to arrange this in person.
Once in Denmark, Jørgen does not seem to just hand over the donation. On site he has new conditions. one of them coming to his daughters wedding. This wedding will be a turning point in his life. A major intersection where he will have to make choices. Perhaps even the toughest choice of his life.
Efter Brylluppet is a complex family drama full of emotions. The scenario (written by Anders Thomas Jensen, director of Adam's Aples) is a well-layered story that is slowly unraveled. The acting of both Rolf Lassgård and Mads Mikelsen are of high class. The camera work is as previously mentioned clearly influenced by the Dogme95 manifest. There is frequent use of a handheld camera. Which is a very good decision, because it makes the dialogues stronger. All in all a solid film.

The Return (Vozvrasjtsjénie) (2003)

Het gebeurd niet vaak dat goede films compleet langs mij heen gaan. Helemaal niet wanneer een film ook nog regelmatig in de prijzen valt. Vijf awards tijdens het prestigieuse filmfestival in Venetië en een nominatie bij de Golden Globes is niet niks.
Na twaalf jaar afwezigheid komt de vader van de jonge broers Ivan en Andrei terug. Het is onduidelijk waar hij al die jaren is geweest. Ze herkennen hem alleen van een oude foto die inmiddels op zolder is beland.
De man beseft zich zijn lange afwezigheid, maar probeerd dit te herstellen. Hij neemt de beide jongens mee op reis naar een afgelegen eiland. De beide broers zijn aan de ene kant enthousiast, maar aan de andere kant erg terughoudend. Wie is deze mysterieuze man? Hij doet zijn best om een goede vader voor hen te zijn, maar hij mist enig takt. Ivan verzet zich hevig tegen zijn autoritaire vader. In tegenstelling tot zijn oudere broer die al snel enige principes en gewoontes van zijn vader overneemt.
Andrei Zvjagintsev levert met The Return een prachtige debuut film af. Het verhaal is subtiel, zit vol beeldspraak en zet tot nadenken. Daarnaast is ook het camerawerk prachtig. De beelden zijn zorgvuldig uitgekozen. The Return is een parel van een film.

It does not happen that often that i completely miss out on good films. Especially movies that regularly win prices. Five awards at the prestigious Venice Film Festival and a golden globe nomination are some of the credits for The Return.
After twelve years absence, the father of the young brothers Andrei and Ivan returns. It is unclear where he has been all these years. They only recognize him of an old photograph.
The man himself realizes his long absence, but tries to restore it. He takes the two boys on a trip to a remote island. Both brothers are enthusiastic but also very cautious. Who is this mysterious man? He does his best to be a good father to them, but he is not very sensitive. Ivan is resisting fiercely against his authoritarian father. Unlike his older brother who quickly takes over some principles and habits of his father.
The Return by Andrei Zvjagintsev is a wonderful debut film. The story is subtle, full of imagery and motivates to reflect. Besides the camera work is beautiful. The images are carefully selected. The Return is a gem of a movie.

Up (2009)

Elk jaar is het weer aftellen naar de release datum van de nieuwe Pixar film. Dit is ook niet verwonderlijk aangezien elke Pixar film tot nog toe een bioscoopsucces is geweest. Of het nu gaat om een robot, een muis of een vis, alles lijkt te werken. Ditmaal is Pixar aan de haal gegaan met een bejaarde man.
Carl Frederickson is een gepensioneerde ballonnenverkoper. We pakken de draad op wanneer Carl nog een kleuter is en de liefde van zijn leven ontmoet. Samen dromen ze er van om te gaan reizen en het avontuur aan te gaan. Door veel tegenslagen is dit er nooit van gekomen in hun leven samen. De inmiddels 78-jarige Carl laat het er echter niet bij zitten en besluit te doen wat zijn vrouw had gezegd, namelijk het avontuur aan te gaan. Hij bindt duizenden ballonnen aan zijn huis en stijgt op om de droomreis, naar Zuid-Amerika, die zij beiden hadden te maken. Wat hij niet weet is dat de 8-jarige Russell nog op de veranda staat. De jonge Naïeve padvinder is nog niet veel verder dan zijn eigen achtertuin geweest. Het duo komt in de wereld van de jungle, zeldzame vogels en pratende honden. Niet alles is hoe Carl zijn reis van zijn dromen had gedacht.
Wat van meet af aan duidelijk is, dat de film een ode is aan de avonturenfilms. Zeppelins, vliegtuigen, Jungle, achtervolgingen, alles is aanwezig. Dit is leuk, maar tegelijkertijd niet zo vernieuwend als een Nemo en Wall-e. De inmiddels tiende film van de Pixar studio is er daarentegen wel weer goed in geslaagd prima karakters neer te zetten. Up is een geslaagde film voor zowel jong als oud.

Each year we countdown to the release date for the new Pixar film. This is not surprising since every Pixar film to date was a cinema success. Whether it's a robot, a mouse or a fish, everything seems to work. This time Pixar make an elderly man the main character.
Fred Carl Erickson is a retired balloon seller. The movie starts when Carl was still a toddler and met the love of his life. Together they dream of travelling and adventures. Because of many setbacks, this never worked out in their life together. The now 78-year old Carl is decides to do what his wife said, when she was still alive. Go and be that adventurer you want to be. He binds thousands of balloons to his house and takes off for his dream trip to South America. What he does not know is that the 8-year-old Russell is on the veranda. The young scout Naive is not much more than his own backyard was. The duo is in the world of the jungle, rare birds and talking dogs. Not everything is what Carl had thought about his journey to become.
What is clear from the moment that the film starts is that it is an ode to the adventure movies. Blimps, airplanes, Jungle, pursuits, everything is there. This is fun, but not as innovative as the worlds created in Nemo and Wall-e. However Pixar did manage to create wonderful characters. Up is a successful film for young and old.
