Bright Star verteld het verhaal van de jonge dichter John Keats. Het verhaal speelt zich af in een 19e eeuws dorpje in de buurt van London. De carière van John keats gaat niet zonder slag of stoot. Zijn eerste dichtbundel wordt door de critici compleet de grond in geboord. Vanaf het begin van de film wordt meteen al duidelijk dat er iets gaande is tussen de jonge realistische Fanny Brawne en de dromer John Keats. Het is echter een liefde die vrijwel onmogelijk lijkt. John is te arm om Fanny ooit te kunnen onderhouden. Hij is dan ook gebrand om een succesvolle dichtbundel uit te brengen. Toch lijkt een relatie tussen de twee onontkoombaar. Wanneer Keats ernstig ziek wordt, lijken de levens uit elkaar te groeien.
Over de kwaliteit van de regisseur Jane campion hoeven we niet veel meer te vertellen. Na het met 3 oscars bekroonde ' The Piano' weet Jane Campion wederom een prachtig romantisch drama af te leveren. De schitterende beelden laten een onuitwisbare indruk achter. Daarnaast is blijft het script boeiend, voornamelijk vanwege het poetische gehalte. Zowel de rol van Fanny Brawne als die van John Keats is prima neergezet door twee voor mij nog compleet onbekende acteurs. Interessant om in de gaten te houden dus. Al met al een prachtige film.

Bright Star tells the story of the young poet John Keats. The story is set in a 19th century village near London. The Career of John Keats is not without a struggle. His first collection of poetry gets mostly negative reviews by the critics. From the beginning of the film is immediately clear that there is something going on between the young realistic Fanny Brawn and the dreamer John Keats. A relationship between them seems almost impossible. John is too poor to ever be able to maintain Fanny. That's why he is keen for a successful book of poetry. Yet, a relationship between the two inevitable. But when keats becomes seriously ill, their lifes seem to grow apart.
No one doubts about the quality of the director Jane Campion. After winning 3 oscars with "The Piano", Jane Campion delivers another lovely romantic drama. The stunning images give an indelible impression. In addition, the script remains fascinating, mainly because of the poetic content. Both the role of Fanny Brawn as John Keats are very well played by (for me) two completely unknown actors. I would love to watch some more by these actors in the future. All in all a wonderful movie.

John Rabe (2009)

Groots en meeslepend meesterwerk over 'De Schindler van China' pronkt op het Nederlandse affiche van John Rabe. Het betreft een waargebeurd verhaal over een Duitse zakenman (en lid van de nazi partij), in dienst van Siemens, in het Chinese Nanking. Het is 1937 wanneer John Rabe teruggeroepen wordt naar de afdeling van Siemens in Berlijn. Tijdens zijn afscheidsfeest wordt Nanking gebombardeerd door je Japanners. Het Japanse leger treed keihard op tegen de Chinese bevolking. John Rabe besluit de deuren van zijn bedrijf open te zetten voor zijn arbeiders en hun families die moeten vluchten voor de Japanners. Samen met een aantal andere medestanders weet hij een veiligheidszone op te zetten om zo honderdduizenden Chinese vluchtelingen op te vangen.
Wat mij betreft is John Rabe een OK film, maar niet meer dan dat. Het acteerwerk van Steve Buscemi is net als altijd voortreffelijk. Ook de rol van John Rabe door Ulrich Tukur is prima. Het karakter van Dr Rosen, adviseur van het Duitse consulaat, gespeeld door Daniel Brühl, kwam echter totaal niet over. Kortom John Rabe is een aardige oorlogsfilm, maar zeker niet groots en meeslepend als Schindler's List.

Grand and compelling masterpiece "The Schindler of China" flaunts on the Dutch poster of John Rabe. It is a true story about a German businessman (and member of the Nazi Party), employed by Siemens, in Nanking. It was 1937 when John Rabe was called back to the department of Siemens in Berlin. During his farewell party Nankin is bombed by Japanese. The Japanese army violently strikes the Chinese population down. John Rabe decides to open the doors of his company for the workers and their families to flee from the Japanese. Along with other a few other internation supporters, he creates a safety zone for over twohundred thousand Chinese refugees.

For me, John Rabe is an OK movie, but nothing more than that. The acting of Steve Buscemi is excellent as always. The role of John Rabe by Ulrich Tukur is fine. The character of Dr. Rosen however, Advisor to the German consulate, played by Daniel Brühl, however, did not appeal in any way.'John Rabe' was a decent war movie, but certainly not great and compelling as Schindler's List.

Nothing Personal (2009)

Anne is een jonge vrouw wiens relatie zojuist is verbroken. Met enkel een rugzak, tent en slaapzak besluit ze op reis te gaan naar Ierland, de eenzaamheid te zoeken. Ze leeft een zwerversbestaan in de natuur van Ierland. Na een tijd komt ze in contact met Martin, een man die een teruggetrokken bestaan leidt. Hij woont op een schiereiland aan de kust en leeft van wat de natuur hem geeft. Martin biedt haar kost en inwoning als ze voor hem wil werken. Ze gaat akkoord, op een voorwaarde, dat ze geen persoonlijk contact hebben.
Wat meteen opvalt in de film is weinige dialoog die de film bevat. Toch komt het verhaal sterk over. Dit komt voornamelijk door het sterke acteerwerk van zowel Lotte Verbeek als Stephen Rea. De beeldtaal van beide acteurs is van grote klasse.
Nothing Personal (winnaar van vier gouden kalveren) is een prachtige film die gaat over de menselijke behoefte aan eenzaamheid. Regisseuse Urszula Antoniak leverd met deze film een prachtig, intiem speelfilmdebuut af. Het is een ode aan de eenzaamheid die de natuur ons kan bieden.

Anne is a young woman whose relationship has just broken. With only a backpack, tent and sleeping bag she decides to travel to Ireland, to seek solitude. She lives a vagabond existence in the nature of Ireland. After a time she comes in contact with Martin, a man who leads a secluded life. He lives on a peninsula on the coast and lives on what nature gives him. Martin offers her room and board if she wants to work for him. She agrees, on one condition, that they have no personal contact.

One thing that is noticed from the beginning of the movie is that it contains little dialogue. Yet the story is strongly visible. This is mainly because of great acting from both Lotte Verbeek and Stephen Rea. The imagery of both actors is of high class.
'Nothing Personal' (winner of four golden calf, Dutch film award) is a beautiful film that deals with the human need for solitude. Urszula Antoniak, director of this film, delivered a beautiful, intimate debut feature. It is an ode to the loneliness that nature can offer us.
