Soms kom je een film tegen in de winkel die meteen tot je spreekt. Soms is het een film waarvan je weet dat je die ooit nog eens moet gaan kijken, soms blijkt het een pareltje onder het stof te zijn. Dit laatste is voor mij hier het geval. De regisseur Lasse Halström kennen we vooral van films als "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Chocolate" en "Dear John". Hier betreft het een oudere film, uit 1985, in het zweeds.
Ingemar is een twaalf-jarige jongen die samen met zijn broer en moeder woont in een klein Zweeds dorpje. Zijn moeder is ernstig ziek en is daardoor niet in staat voor de beide jongens te zorgen. Ingemar moet daarom bij zijn oom en tante gaan wonen. Zijn hond waar hij erg dol op is mag echter niet mee.
Tijdens zijn verblijf bij oom en tante raakt hij bevriend met Saga, een meisje dat erg goed kan voetballen en boxen. Hij heeft het erg naar zijn zin bij zijn oom en tante, maar mist ook zijn moeder en hond erg.
"My Life as a Dog" is een bijzondere beeldvertolking vanuit de ogen van een twaalfjarige jongen. De vergelijking tussen de hond Laika, die de ruimte ingestuurd is met Russische astronauten, en zijn eigen leven is prachtig in het verhaal verweven. Het regiewerk van Lasse Halström is prima. De film bevat een aantal prachtige camerastandpunten. Daarnaast is het acteerwerk van Anton Glanzelius en Melinda Kinnaman (gezien hun jonge leeftijd) ook erg goed. Gelukkig is deze vergeten parel weer onder het stof vandaan gekomen.

Sometimes you find a dvd in a store that speaks right to you. Sometimes it's a movie that you know of, but still need to watch, sometimes it turns out to be a jewel among the dust. The latter is the case here for me. Lasse Halström mostly known from films such as "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Chocolate" and "Dear John"is the director. This concerns an older movie from 1985, in Swedish.
Ingemar is a twelve year old boy who lives with his brother and mother in a small Swedish village. His mother is seriously ill and therefore unable to care for two boys. Ingemar therefore must live with his uncle and aunt. His dog which he is very fond of them can not come.
During his stay with uncle and aunt, he becomes friends with Saga, a girl who is very good at playing football and boxing. He really likes being with his uncle and aunt, but misses his mother and dog bad.
"My Life As A Dog" is a special image interpretation told from the perspective of a twelve year old boy. The comparison between the dog Laika, who was sent into space with Russian astronauts, and his life is beautifully woven into the story. Lasse Halström did a great job as a driector. The film contains some great camera angles. In addition, the acting of the Anton Glanzelius and Melinda Kinnaman is very good (considering their age). Fortunately, this forgotten jewel is rediscovered.

Inception (2010)

Dat Christopher Nolan films kan maken, dat was bekend. Met films als The Dark Knight, Batman Begins en Memento heeft hij laten zien een van de beste regisseurs van het moment te zijn. De vraag was echter of hij het weer voor elkaar zou krijgen een film van een dergelijk hoog niveau te brengen.
Op de poster prijkt 'Your mind is the scene of the crime'. En dat is precies waar de film over gaat. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is een meester als het gaat om creëren van droomwerelden en het daaruit stelen van andermans ideeën. Door mensen in een kunstmatig diepe slaap te brengen weet hij met zijn onderbewustzijn door te dringen in hun dromen.
Op een gegeven moment wordt hij benaderd om in plaats van een idee te stelen een idee bij iemand te planten. Dom besluit de bijna onmogelijke opdracht aan te nemen. Hij stelt een team van experts samen voor deze operatie. Naast dit team gaat ook de opdrachtgever Saito mee.
Dromen hebben nooit een duidelijk begin. Vandaar dat Nolan regelmatig midden in een scène begint. Hierdoor is niet altijd even duidelijk als kijker of je in een droom of in realiteit zit. In feite is Inception niet moeilijk te volgen, zolang je goed je kop erbij houdt.
Christopher Nolan heeft met Inception weer een film van formaat op zijn naam geschreven. Een film vol interessante ideeën, verassende wendingen en flitsende actie scènes. Van begin tot eind weet de film je te blijven boeien.

I guess that nobody will question by now that Christopher Nolan is a great director. With films like The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Memento, he showed to be one of the best directors at the moment. The question was whether he would continue to make a movie that good.
The poster says: "Your mind is the scene of the crime." And that is precisely what the film is about. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a master when it comes to creating dream worlds and stealing other people's ideas from their dreams. By putting people in a deep artificial sleep he goes into their dreams with his subconscious.
At one moment he was approached to insert an idea instead of stealing an idea. Dom decides to take the almost impossible task. He puts a team of experts together for this operation. Saito, his client is also there to supervise.
Dreams never have a definite beginning. That's why Nolan regularly started shooting in the middle of a scene. It is not always clear for the viewers whether you're in a dream or reality. Inception in fact is not difficult to follow, as long as you keep track.
Christopher Nolan did it again. Inception is an outstanding movie. A film full of interesting ideas, surprising twists, flashy action scenes, good acting and a great story. From beginning to end the movie to stays interesting.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2010)

Met Wes Anderson aan het roer weet je nooit wat je moet verwachten. Het is altijd weer een feest om een van zijn films te mogen zien. Of het nou gaat om The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou of The Darjeeling Limited. Het zijn allemaal bijzondere excentrieke films vol grappige details en droge humor. Fantastic Mr. Fox is wat dit betreft een beetje de vreemde eend in de bijt. Het betreft hier namelijk een "Stop-Motion" adaptatie van het Roald Dahl Boek 'De Fantastische Meneer Vos'. Met onder andere George Clooney, Meryl Streep en Bill Murray die de stemmen verzorgen, mag je wel spreken van een supersterren ensemble.
We pakken het verhaal van Mr. Fox op wanneer hij het leven roven achter zich laat. Hij beloofd zijn vrouw nooit meer voedsel te gaan stelen bij de boeren in de buurt en besluit te gaan werken bij de plaatselijke krant. Maar na 12 jaar begint het allemaal weer te kriebelen en besluit hij in het geheim het roven weer op te pakken. Hij beroofd echter de verkeerde boeren, namelijk Boggis, Bunce en Bean, die wraak willen nemen. Meneer Fox en zijn familie graven zich in om uit de handen van de boeren te blijven. Boggis, Bunce en Bean zijn echter vast besloten. Zoals in veel van Wes Anderson's films gaat het ook in deze film weer om de relatie tussen vader en zoon. Ash probeert zich voortdurend te bewijzen voor zijn vader, maar deze heeft meer oog voor zijn neefje Kristofferson.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is een prachtige animatiefilm die zowel op artistiek vlak als inhoudelijk een prima niveau weet te halen. Terecht dan ook dat de film een Oscar-nominatie kreeg voor beste animatie film. Leuk detail is dat het jasje van Mr. Fox gemaakt is van een oude colbert van regisseur Wes Anderson.

With Wes Anderson you never know what to expect. It's always a treat to see one of his films. Whether it is The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or The Darjeeling Limited, they are all special eccentric films full of funny details and dry humor. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a "Stop Motion" adaptation of the Roald Dahl book 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox'. In That way it this movie is somehow different. With George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray on voices, you may speak of an superstars ensemble.
We tackle the story of Mr. Fox when he leaves his life of stealing behind. He promised his wife never to steal food from the farmers in the neighborhood again and decides to work with the local newspaper. But after 12 years the desire and thrill of stealing comes back and he secretly decides to start robbing again. However, he robbed the wrong farmers, namely Boggis, Bunce and Bean, who want to take revenge. Mr. Fox and his family dig themselves in, to stay out of the hands of the farmers. Boggis, Bunce and Bean are determined to get back on Mr. Fox and his family. As in many of Wes Anderson's film is also in this movie about the relationship between father and son. Ash constantly tries to prove himself to his father, but he takes more notice of his nephew Kristofferson.
Mr. Fantastic. Fox is a wonderful animated film that is both artistically and subject matter-wise on a good level. Therefore, the movie rightly received an Oscar nomination for best animated film. Nice detail is that the jacket of Mr. Fox was made from an old jacket from director Wes Anderson.

Micmacs à Tire-larigot (2009)

Het was al weer even geleden dat we voor het laatst een nieuwe film mochten bekijken van deze wonderlijke regisseur, want dat is hij. Met films als Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain en Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles op zijn naam mogen we met recht spreken van een bijzondere filmkunstenaar. Ook Micmacs past in ditzelfde genre. Alles wijst hierop; Het oog voor detail, de sepia kleuren, de bizarre toevalligheden, mooie close-ups, excentriciteit, hilariteit en emotie. Alle elementen zijn weer verwerkt in deze film.
Jaren geleden is Bazil's vader omgekomen tijdens het onschadelijk maken van een mijn. Zijn moeder kan het niet meer aan en Bazil groeit op in een weeshuis. Jaren later werkt Bazil in een videotheek waar hij op een gegeven moment ooggetuige is van een afrekening in het criminele circuit. Door bizarre toeval wordt hij in het hoofd getroffen door een afgeketste kogel en raakt in coma. Eenmaal ontwaakt blijkt zijn hele leven veranderd. Zijn appartement is verhuurd aan iemand anders, zijn bezittingen zijn allemaal zo goed als weg en zijn baan is ook inmiddels aan iemand anders vergeven. Er zit niets anders op dan op straat te gaan leven. Hier ontmoet hij een aantal anderen die een zelfde soort bestaan leven. Een groep die leeft van wat zij op straat vinden. Sterker nog het wordt zijn familie. Samen met hen besluit hij wraak te nemen op de wapenfabrikanten die zijn leven dwars zitten. Ze zetten een briljant plan op om beide wapenfabrikanten tegen elkaar uit te spelen.
Jeunet heeft laten zien dat hij met al zijn elementen elke keer weer een bijzondere film neer te zetten. Hoewel het niet van het zelfde niveau is als Amelie en Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles is het nog steeds een prachtige film.

It had been a while since we last were able to watch a new movie made by this wonderful director, because that's what he is. With films such as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain and Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles, we can speak of a very special film artist. Micmac also fits in this same genre. Everything points to this, the attention to detail, the sepia color, the bizarre coincidences, nice close-ups, eccentricity, laughter and emotion. All elements are again incorporated into this film.
Years ago, Bazil's father died while defusing a mine. His mother couldn't take it anymore, so Bazil grew up in an orphanage. Years later, while working in a video store Bazil is a witness of a assassination in the criminal world. By bizarre coincidence, he was hit in the head by a bounced bullet and slips into a coma. Once awakened, his life is changed. His apartment is rented to someone else, his belongings are all almost all gone and his job is given to someone else. There is no other choice than to live on the streets. Here he meets a number of others who live a similar existence. It's a group who lives from what they find in the streets. They become his family. Together with them, he decides to take revenge on the arms manufacturers who have made his life so miserable. They set up a brilliant plan to play both arms manufacturers out against each other.
Jeunet has shown that he is able to make another very special movie with all the elements without making it look like another movie in the same genre. Although not the same level as Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles and Amelie the this is still a beautiful film.

Fish Tank (2009)

Al vanaf de eerste minuten is duidelijk dat Fish Tank een sociaal-realistisch drama is. Een rauwe film vol emotie, uit het leven gegrepen. Naast regisseurs als Ken Loach en Shane Maedows kan ik nog een Britse regisseur toevoegen aan dit genre.
Mia is een meisje van 15 die met haar 11 jarige zusje Tyler woont in een klein flatje in een grauwe arbeiderswijk in Essex. Ze is agressief, verstoten door haar vriendinnen, net van school afgestuurd en doet de hele dag niet veel meer dan dansen en rondlopen in de stad. Het is haar droom om professioneel danseres te worden. Hun moeder, een instabiele vrouw, drinkt veel en schenkt totaal geen aandacht aan haar gezin. Ze laat haar kinderen aan hun lot over en leeft haar eigen leven. Er lijkt echter een kanteling te komen in hun leven wanneer hun moeder een nieuwe vriend Connor mee naar huis heeft genomen. Naast de aandacht die hij geeft aan moeder Joanne geeft hij ook de kinderen de aandacht die zij zo hard nodig hebben. Mia is erg blij met alle aandacht die Connor haar schenkt en lijkt zich tot hem aangetrokken te voelen. Niets is echter wat het lijkt. Als een zeepbel lijken haar dromen uiteen te spatten.
Een dik compliment mag gegeven worden voor de acteer prestatie van Katie Jarvis. Deze is zeer geloofwaardig. De keuze voor Katie als hoofdpersoon mag een bijzondere genoemd worden. Ze werd ontdekt toen ze ruzie maakte met haar vriend. Op dat moment was ze net van school gestuurd en had ze geen werk. Het personage wat ze hier speelde ligt dus niet ver van haar eigen leven vandaan. Het camerawerk is rauw, maar ook erg mooi. We volgen Mia de hele film door. Deze manier van filmen doet enigszins documentaire-achtig aan. Dit geeft een heel realistisch beeld. Arnold levert met Fish Tank is een prachtig rauw sociaal-realistisch drama af die zeker niet af doet voor het werk van Loach.

From the first minutes Fishtank is clear that this movie is a social-realistic drama. A movie raw, emotional and realistic. Just like the directors Ken Loach and Shane Maedows I can add another British to this genre.
Mia is a 15 year old girl who lives with her 11 year old sister Tyler in a small apartment in a gray working class area of Essex. She is aggressive, rejected by her friends and is just expelled from school The only thing she does is all day dance and walk around the city. It is her dream to become a professional dancer.
Their mother is an unstable woman who drinks a lot and pays absolutely no attention to her family. She leaves her children to their fate and lives her own life. There seems to be a tilt in their lives when their mother takes a new friend Connor home.
Not only does he care for their mother Joanne, he also gives the children the attention they so desperately need. Mia is very happy with all the attention it gives Connor and seems to feel attracted to him. But nothing is what it seems. Her bubble of dreams is about to burs.
A thick compliment can be given for the acting performance of Katie Jarvis. This is very credible. The choice of Katie as a main character may be called surprising. She was discovered while she was fighting with her boyfriend. At that time, she was expelled from school and she had no work. The character which she is playing is not far away from her own life. The cinematography is raw but beautiful. We follow Mia through the whole movie. This way of filming almost seems to have a documentary texture and seems to be very realistic. Arnold delivers a beautiful raw social-realistic drama with Fish Tank and is certainly not less than the work of Ken Loach.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

Al sinds de zomer van 2009 keek ik al uit naar deze film. Niet alleen omdat de regie in handen was van Spike Jonze (Regisseur van Being John Malkovic en Adaptation), maar vooral vanwege de wonderschone, fantasierijke trailer die mij meteen meenam in het avontuur van Max. Al snel begreep ik dat het hier ging om een verfilming van een prentenboek gemaakt door Maurice Sendak.
Max is een 9-jarig jongetje vol kattenkwaad. In eerste instantie lijkt hij een echte wildebras, die avontuur zoekt, maar als snel blijkt dat hierachter een heel gevoelige Max zit. Hij voelt zich niet begrepen door zowel zijn zus als zijn moeder. Als hij op een gegeven moment ruzie krijgt met zijn moeder, rent hij weg. Hij vlucht naar zijn fantasiewereld. Hij ontmoet daar de "Wild Things". Harige grote monsters, die zijn gevoelens symboliseren. Ze zijn kwetsbaar, eenzaam, depressief, bang, gevoelig, maar ook behulpzaam, vriendelijk, liefdevol en meelevend. Max wordt in deze fantasie wereld dus indirect geconfronteerd met zijn eigen gevoel.
Omdat het prentenboek slechts 10 zinnen bevat, moest er een compleet nieuw script geschreven worden. Dave Eggers en Spike Jonze zijn hier zeker in geslaagd. Het verhaal lijkt in eerste instantie oppervlakkig, maar is dit geenszins. Met name de karakters van de monsters zijn prachtig uitgebalanceerd. De rol van Max lijkt hem op het lijf geschreven. Niet alleen heet hij in het echte leven ook Max, in de film is hij Max! Ook de cast voor de stemmen mag er zijn. Deze zijn zorgvuldig uitgekozen. De Soundtrack is eveneens fenomenaal en blijft nog dagenlang in de hoofd zitten.
"Where the Wild Things Are" is een prachtige fantasierijke metaforische vertelling die niet alleen kinderen zal aanspreken, maar ook zeker de harten van volwassenen zal stelen.

Since the summer of 2009 I looked forward to this film. Not only because the movie is directed by Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovic and Adaptation), but mainly because of the wonderfully imaginative trailer that took me straight into the adventure of Max. Soon I understood that this film was based on the picture book by Maurice Sendak.
Max is a 9 year old boy full of mischief. At first he seems a real tomboy, who is always looking for adventure, but soon you discover that behind all this is very sensitive boy. He feels misunderstood by both his sister and his mother. At one point he gets into a fight with his mother and he runs away. He flees to his fantasy world. There he meets "The Wild Things". Big hairy monsters, which symbolize his feelings. They are vulnerable, lonely, depressed, frightened, vulnerable, but also helpful, friendly, loving and caring. Max is indirectly being confronted with his own feelings in this fantasy world.
Because the picture book only contains 10 sentences, there was a completely new script written. Dave Eggers and Spike Jonze have certainly succeeded. The story seems to be superficial, but is by no means. In particular, the characters of the Monsters are beautifully balanced. The role of Max seems to him like a glove. Not only is his name in real life Max, in the film he is Max! The cast,of the voices are very well selected and fit beautifully. The Soundtrack is also phenomenal and continued for days in my head.
"Where the Wild Things Are" is a wonderful imaginative metaphorical tale that will not only appeal to children, but certainly will steal the hearts of adults too.

Un Prophete (2009)

Al sinds de lovende kritiek van het afgelopen filmfestival in Cannes zag ik er al naar uit om deze film te gaan zien. Vorige week was het dan zo ver. Een ding was vanaf het begin van de film al duidelijk. De lovende kritiek was terecht.
Un Prophete vertelt het verhaal van de naïeve 19-jarige analfabeet Malik El Djebena. Hij is veroordeeld tot zes jaar in de gevangenis. Al snel krijgt hij te maken met het harde rauwe gevangenisleven. Een leven van geweld, corruptie en hiërarchie. Malik komt onder de hoede van César Luciano, leider van de Corsicaanse maffia. Malik leert snel en klimt steeds verder op binnen de organisatie die Luciano heeft weten op te bouwen in de gevangenis. Daarnaast weet hij ook het vertrouwen van hem te winnen. Hij maakt van dit alles dan ook gebruik van om voor zichzelf ook een organisatie op te zetten. Wat volgt is een indrukwekkende machtsstrijd tussen de twee.
Un Prophete is een zeer geslaagde film die tussen een gevangenisdrama en een maffiafilm inhangt. Naast zeer goede regiewerk van Audiard verdient zeker Tahar Rahim veel lof. Hij draagt vrijwel de hele film alleen en doet dit overtuigend. Maar ook zeker het acteerwerk van Niels Arestrup is formidabel. Dat de film inmiddels al met prijzen is overladen lijkt mij niet meer dan terecht. Un Prophete heeft alles in zich om een klassieker te worden.

Since the praising reviews at the film festival in Cannes last year, I was already looking forward to go and see this movie. Last week I had the opportunity. One thing was clear from the beginning of the film. The movie was rightly praised.
Un Prophete tells the story of the naive, illiterate 19-year old Malik El Djebena . He was sentenced to six years in prison. From day one he gets to know the raw hard life in prison. A life of violence, corruption and hierarchy. Malik is under the care of Cesar Luciano, leader of the Corsican Mafia. Malik learns quickly and climbs ever further within the organization that Luciano was able to build in prison. Besides he gains his confidence. He uses all of this for himself to set up an organization an organization on his own. What follows is an impressive power struggle between the two.
Un Prophete is a very well made film that lingers between a prison drama and a mafia movie. Besides the very good job of director Audiard, actor Tahar Rahim deserves much praise. He bears almost the entire movie on his own and this is very convincing. But certainly the acting of Niels Arestrup is also formidable. That the film has already been overloaded with prices seems only right. Un Prophete has everything in it to become a classic.
