A Serious Man

Ik heb nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken dat de Coen brothers tot mijn favoriete regisseurs behoren. Niet zo zeer omdat het regiewerk zo baanbrekend is, maar meer omdat hun films altijd weer voor anderhalf uur hilarische momenten zorgt. A Serious Man, anders als de titel ons doet geloven, is daar geen uitzondering op.
Larry Gopnik is een Joodse Natuurkunde docent. Hij is getrouwd en heeft 2 kinderen. Het leven gaat zijn gangetje en alles lijkt normaal te zijn, maar niets is wat het lijkt. Zoals in het nummer Somebody To Love van Jefferson Airplane (When the truth is found to be lies). Zijn vrouw heeft een affaire met een goede vriend en wil van hem scheiden. Zijn zoon denkt alleen maar aan zich zelf en is volop aan het experimenteren met drugs. Zijn broer woont bij hun in huis omdat hij problemen heeft. En tot overmaat van ramp probeert een student hem nog te chanteren ook. Hij doet zijn best om een serieuze man te zijn, maar leven lijkt te eindigen in een grote puinhoop. In zijn zoektocht naar waarom hem dit alles heeft gebeurd zoekt hij de hulp in van zijn plaatselijke rabbi's. A Serious man is een opeenstapeling van hilarische zwarte humor met een knipoog naar de Joodse wortels van de regisseurs.
Met A Serious Man hebben de Coen broers weer een prima komedie afgeleverd. Niet veel op aan te merken, maar ook niet veel over te vertellen.

I've never concealed that the Coen brothers are amongst my favorite directors. Not because of groundbreaking work in directing, but more because their films are always hilarious. A Serious Man, otherwise than the title makes us believe, is no exception.
Larry Gopnik is a Jewish Physics teacher. He is married and has 2 children. Life goes on as usual and everything seems to be normal, but nothing is what it seems. As stated in the song Somebody To Love by Jefferson Airplane (When the truth is found to be lies). His wife is having an affair with a good friend and wants to divorce from him. His son is selfish, spends his money and is experimenting with drugs. His brother lives in their house because he has problems. And finally there is a student who tries to blackmail him. He does his best to be a serious man, but his life seems to end in a big mess. In his search for why everything is going this way he seeks the help of his local rabbis. A Serious Man is an accumulation of hilarious black humor with a nod to the Jewish roots of the directors.
With A Serious Man, the Coen brothers again delivered an excellent comedy. Not much to be praised, but not much to tell. Just plain good.
