Bepaalde onderwerpen zijn altijd lastig om komedies over te maken. Het onderwerp van deze film, kanker, is een dergelijk onderwerp. Debuterend scenarist Will Reiser is hierin aardig geslaagd. Het is een mooie luchtige benadering van dit serieuze onderwerp.

De 27-jarige Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) heeft een perfect leven. Hij heeft een mooie vriendin, een leuke baan als schijver voor radio programma's en met Kyle (Seth Rogen) een hele goede vriend. Maar als Adam last krijgt van zijn rug, ontdekt hij dat hij een zeldzame en mogelijk fatale vorm van kanker heeft. Zijn zorgeloze leven veranderd van de ene dag op de andere in een drama. Zijn leven van uitgaan, sporten, etc veranderd ineens in een leven van chemotherapie en therapiesessies van zijn veel te jonge en altijd optimistische therapeut. En het wordt alleen maar erger wanneer blijkt dat zijn vriendin hem bedriegt. Gelukkig blijft zijn beste vriend Kyle hem steunen door alles heen.

50/50 is een geslaagde film over een moeilijk onderwerp. Het heeft de brug weten te slaan tussen komedie en drama zonder disrespectvol te zijn, mede door het acteerwerk van Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Het is een grappig, ontroerend en origineel verhaal over vriendschap, liefde en overleven. De rol van Seth Rogen is ook een vrolijke noot en een mooie toevoeging voor de film. Al met al een prima film.

Certain subjects are always difficult to make fun about. The subject of this movie, cancer, is such a subject. Debuting screenwriter Will Reiser succeeded quite well in creating a script for this movie. It has a beautiful airy approach to this serious subject.

The 27-year-old Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has a perfect life. He has a beautiful girlfriend, a great job as a writer for radio programs and has the best friend he could ever wish for, Kyle (Seth Rogen). But when Adam's back continues to hurt, he discovers that he has a rare and potentially fatal form of cancer. His life changes from one day to another into a drama. His life of entertainment, sports, etc suddenly becomes a life of chemotherapy and therapy sessions by the far too young and always optimistic therapist katherine. And it only gets worse when it appears that his girlfriend is cheating on him. Fortunately, his best friend Kyle to support him through everything.

50/50 is a successful film about a difficult subject. It has managed to bridge the gap between comedy and drama without being disrespectful, partly because of the acting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is a funny, touching and original story about friendship, love and survival. The role of Seth Rogen is a cheerful note and a nice addition for the movie. All in all a good movie.

Win Win (2011)

"In the game of life, you can't lose 'em all", prijkt op de achterkant van de blu-ray. En eigenlijk is dit al de essentie van het verhaal. De film waarin we kennis maken met Mike, die prachtig wordt vertolkt door de altijd solide spelende Paul Giamatti.

Mike is advocaat, maar heeft eigenlijk veel te weinig cliënten om zijn business rendabel te houden. Daarnaast is Mike trainer van het plaatselijke Highschool worstelteam. Wanneer een van Mike's cliënten onbekwaam wordt verklaard en uit huis gezet dreigt te worden, besluit hij zich over deze client te ontfermen. Mike doet dit echt niet op een geheel eerlijke wijze. Hij stopt zijn client in een bejaardentehuis en strijkt zelf het geld op.
Op een dag staat de kleinzoon (Kyle) van zijn client op de stoep, vragend naar zijn opa. Hij is uit zijn thuissituatie gevlucht om bij zijn grootvader te gaan wonen. Dit is een situatie waar Mike geen rekening mee heeft gehouden. Hij voelt zich verantwoordelijk en besluit Kyle in huis te nemen. We zien Kyle steeds meer tot bloei komen, daarnaast blijkt hij ook een voortreffelijk worstelaar te zijn.
De situatie wordt alleen maar ingewikkelder wanneer een paar maanden later ook de moeder van Kyle ten tonele verschijnt. Dit alles zet niet alleen Kyle's leven weer op de kop, maar ook het leven van Mike.

Thomas McCarthy, regisseur van 'The Visitor' en 'The Station Agent' heeft met 'Win Win' wederom een prima film afgeleverd. Hoewel ik denk dat het script wat zwakjes was. Aan de andere kant was het acteerwerk van zowel Paul Giamatti als Amy Ryan Solide. Een Mooi, klein, komisch drama.

"In the game of life, you can not lose 'em all" is imprinted on the back of the blu-ray. And this is actually the essence of the story. In this film we meet Mike, who is beautifully played by the always solid acting Paul Giamatti.

Mike is a lawyer, but has far too few clients to make his business viable. In addition, Mike coaches the local high school wrestling team. When one of Mike's clients is declared incompetent and is likely to be put out of his house, he decides to take care of his client. His reasons however are not entirely honest. He puts his client in a nursing home and keeps the money to take care of him for himself.

One day his clients grandson (Kyle) comes around asking for his grandfather. He fled from his home to live with his grandfather. This is a situation that Mike has not taken into account. He feels responsible and decides to take Kyle into his home. We see Kyle come into bloom, he also appears to be an excellent wrestler.
The situation becomes complicated when a few months later the mother of Kyle appeares on the scene. All of this turns not only Kyle's but also mike's life upside down.

Thomas McCarthy, director of 'The Visitor' and 'The Station Agent' has delivered another good movie with 'Win Win'. Although I think the script was a bit weak. On the other hand, the acting of both Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan was quite solid. A nice, small, comic drama.

My Week With Marilyn (2011)

Er zijn al zo veel boeken, films en documentaires verschenen over Marilyn Monroe. Toch blijft het boeien om meer over haar te horen, te lezen of te zien. Wellicht omdat deze icoon veel te vroeg is overleden, misschien is het haar onpeilbare karakter.

Colin Clark is 23 jaar en net afgestudeerd aan Oxford. Hij is vastbesloten om in de filmindustrie te werken. Al snel wordt zijn doorzettingsvermogen erkent en wordt hij aangenomen als 3rd assistent director op de set van 'The Prince and the Showgirl'. Director en hoofdrolspeler Laurence Olivier heeft Marilyn Monroe aangetrokken om naast hem de rol te vertolken van showgirl. We zien een eigenzinnige, onzekere Marilyn Monroe. Ze worstelt met haar identiteit als persoon en filmster. Nadat haar man weer naar Amerika moet vertrekken voor zaken, lijkt ze haar zekerheid helemaal kwijt te zijn geraakt. Ontredderd blijft ze achter in Engeland zonder dat ze iemand heeft om te vertrouwen. Totdat ze Colin ontmoet. We zien zijn bijzondere week met Marilyn.

Regisseur Simon Curtis heeft jarenlange ervaring met het regisseren van tv-series en tv-films. Dit is zijn speelfilmdebuut. En wat voor een! Het leverde hem 6 Bafta en 2 Oscar nominaties op. Dit is niet alleen te danken aan de regie, maar meer dan ook het fantastische acteerwerk van Michelle Williams. Zelden heb ik zo'n goede vertolking gezien van Marilyn Monroe. Niet alleen de icoon Marilyn weet ze neer te zetten, maar ook de persoon hier achter. In een woord prachtig!

There are so many books, films and documentaries about Marilyn Monroe. But still it's fascinating to read, see or hear more about her. Perhaps because this icon is died way too early or maybe it's her unfathomable character.

Director Simon Curtis has years of experience directing TV series and TV movies. This is his feature film debut. And what a great debut! A Week With Marilyn earned 6 Bafta and 2 Oscar nominations. This is not only due to the direction, but also because of the magnificent performance of Michelle Williams. Rarely I have seen such a good rendition of Marilyn Monroe. Not only did she manage to doe a fantastic job by playing the icon Marilyn, but she also manage to capture the woman behind the icon. In one word, Wonderful!

War Horse (2011)

Wat kan je nog over Steven Spielberg zeggen. De man is een icoon in filmland. Zijn films zijn altijd degelijk en af en toe zijn er briljante uitschieters. Vorig jaar bracht hij naast de prachtige verfilming van 'The Adventures of Tintin' ook nog de film War Horse uit. De film is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige kinderboek uit 1982.

Ted Narracott is een veteraan en runt samen met zijn vrouw en zoon een boerderij. Om zijn land te kunnen omploegen heeft hij een paard nodig. Op de paardenmarkt aangekomen raakt hij onder de indruk van een prachtig jong volbloed renpaard. Het Paard is totaal ongeschikt om het land te laten ploegen, maar toch besluit hij hem te kopen.
Zijn zoon Albert traint het paard. Langzaam maar zeker ontstaat er een bijzondere band tussen de twee. Albert noemt het paard Joey. Helaas mislukte de oogst en moet Ted kiezen of de boerderij te verliezen of om het paard te verkopen. Het paard wordt verkocht aan een Engelse officier. De eerste wereldoorlog is namelijk net begonnen. Albert en zijn paard worden uit elkaar gerukt zonder dat ze afscheid van elkaar kunnen nemen. Albert beloofd om Joey weer terug te vinden.We zien hoe Joey in de Eerste Wereldoorlog telkens van baasje wisseld. Iedereen die Joey leert kennen raakt onder de indruk van het prachtige dier.

Dat Spielberg een fantastisch regisseur is, staat buiten kijf. Het is toch knap en lef hebben om een paard als hoofdpersoon in de film te hebben. Toch levert dit toch enig probleem op. Er is minder diepgang dan bij een goed uitgewerkt karakter. Daarnaast werkt het ook niet mee dat het paard telkens wisselt van eigenaar. In de film wordt veel gebruik gemaakt van computeranimatie, hetgeen regelmatig terug te zien is. Spielberg werkte bij deze film weer samen met de componist John Williams, die weer een prachtige soundtrack heeft gemaakt. War Horse is een Prima film. Geen uitschieter, maar ruim voldoende kwaliteit.

What more can you say about Steven Spielberg. The man is an icon in Hollywood. His films have always been solid and occasionally there are brilliant exceptions. Last year alongside the beautiful movie "The Adventures of Tintin", he also directed the movie War Horse. The film is based on the eponymous children's book from 1982.

Ted Narracott is a veteran and runs a farm with his wife and son. To be able to plow his land, he needs a horse. The moment Ted arrives on the horse market, he becomes impressed with a beauty of a young thoroughbred racehorse. The Horse is totally unsuitable for plowing the land, but he decides to buy him anyway.
His son Albert trains the horse. Slowly but surely a special bond grows between the two. Albert calls the horse Joey. Unfortunately, the harvest failed and Ted must choose whether to lose the farm or to sell the horse. The horse is sold to an English officer. The First World War just begun. Albert and his horse are torn apart without being able have a proper goodbye. Albert promises to find Joey and bring him back. We follow Joey and his different owners during the First World War. Anyone who gets to know Joey falls under the spell of the beauty of the animal.

That Spielberg is a great director, is beyond dispute. It is risky and brave to have a horse as the lead role in the film. Unfortunately this gives some problems. There is less depth than a well-developed character. In addition, it does not work very well that the ownership of the horse changes every 15 minutes. Extensive use of computer animation was used in this film, which you can notice quite regularly, unfortunately. Again Spielberg worked with the composer John Williamson on this film, who again made ​​a wonderful soundtrack. War Horse is a great movie. No outlier, but plenty of quality.

De documentaire SENNA laat de opmars in de Formule 1 zien van de gelijknamige coureur. SENNA geeft een prachtig beeld van de persoon Ayrton Senna, van de passie, zijn gretigheid, zijn emotie. De documentaire laat tegelijkertijd de hardheid en de politiek van de sport zien. De film is prachtig opgebouwd. We volgen de Coureur van 1984 tot aan zijn dood in 1994. We zien zijn grote overwinningen, maar ook zijn teleurstellingen en zijn worstelingen.

SENNA is niet alleen sportbeelden, maar ook een blik achter de schermen. Daarnaast heeft de familie van Senna prachtige beelden van het prive leven van Ayrton Senna beschikbaar gesteld voor deze documentaire. De film is een intiem document geworden die eer doet aan de persoon Ayrton Senna.

The documentary shows the rise of Ayrton Senna in Formula 1. SENNA provides a beautiful picture of the person Ayrton Senna, the passion, his eagerness, his emotion. The documentary shows both the hardness and the politics of sport as well. The film is beautifully cut into chapters. We follow the Driver from 1984 until his death in 1994. We see his great victories, but also his disappointments and his struggles.

SENNA is not only sports footage, but also gives you a look behind the scenes. In addition, the Senna family provided beautiful material of the private life of Ayrton Senna for this documentary. The film is an intimate document, worthy of the person Ayrton Senna.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Woody Allen is een interessante filmmaker. Bijna elk jaar komt hij met een nieuwe film op de proppen. Elke keer is het weer de vraag, zal het een goede film zijn. Zijn werk kent namelijk veel goede, maar ook veel matige films. Toch moet ik toegeven dat er de afgelopen paar jaar best een aantal aardige films van zijn hand zijn verschenen. Zo was er in 2005 'Matchpoint' en in 2008 nog 'Vicky Christina Barcelona', waar Penélope Cruz nog een Oscar voor kreeg.

Parijs is de stad van de liefde, dat weet iedereen. Je zou een romantische komedie verwachten, maar dat is het niet echt... Ik zou eerder zeggen dat Gil, de hoofdpersoon de liefde verklaart aan de kunststad Parijs.
Gil is een scenarioschrijver in Hollywood met maar één droom, een eigen roman schrijven. Hij is met zijn verloofde Inez en haar rijke ouders op vakantie in Parijs. Gil raakt direct na aankomst in de ban van de schoonheid van de stad. Hij lijkt totaal geen interesse meer te hebben in Inez.
Tijdens een nachtelijke wandeling stopt er om middernacht ineens een Peugeot oldtimer met feestende mensen naast hem. Ze nodigen hem uit om mee te gaan in het feestgedruis. Tot zijn verbazing brengt deze rit hem terug in de tijd en ontmoet hij zijn helden. Hij komt op een feestje terecht, waar hij Cole Porter en Ernest Hemingway ontmoet. 's Ochtends ontwaakt hij weer in de realiteit van alledag. Hij besluit de volgende dagen weer een nachtwandeling naar hetzelfde punt te maken. We zien nog een aantal ontmoetingen met kunstenaars die hun inspiratie uit de stad Parijs haalden, zoals Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso en Salvador Dalí.
Door deze ontmoetingen weet Gil dat hij zijn huidige relatie opnieuw moet beoordelen. Is Inez de liefde van zijn leven.

Midnight in Paris is een prachtige ode aan de 'lichtstad'. Het laat de schoonheid zien, waardoor zoveel kunstenaars beïnvloed waren. Het is een prachtig surrealistisch sprookje waarin we kennis mogen maken met zoveel grootheden uit de kunstgeschiedenis. Owen Wilson geeft zijn rol prachtig kleur. Hij zal er geen oscar mee verdienen, maar deze rol was hem op het lijf geschreven.

Woody Allen is an interesting filmmaker. Almost every year he makes a new movie. Every time it's the question again, will it be a great film. His work is often very good, but he also has released quite a lot mediocre movies. Yet I must admit that over the past few years he made quite a few nice movies. So in 2005 there was 'Match Point' and in 2008 'Vicky Christina Barcelona', for which Penelope Cruz won an Oscar.

Paris is the city of love, everyone knows that. You would expect a romantic comedy, but it's not really ... I would say that Gil, the main character declares his love to the city of art, Paris.
Gil is a Hollywood screenwriter. He dreams of releasing his own novel. He and his fiancee Inez and her wealthy parents are on holiday in Paris. On his arrival Gil immediately admires the beauty of the city. He seems to have completely lost interest in Inez.

During a night walk a vintage Peugeot Taxi with party people stops next to him. They invite him to join in the festivities. To his surprise, this ride takes him back in time and he gets to meet his heroes. He is at a party, where he meets Ernest Hemingway and Cole Porter. In the morning he wakes up back in the reality of everyday life. He decides the next day to take another night walk to the same point where he got picked up. We see a number of meetings with artists who took inspiration from the city of Paris, like Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
Through these meetings Gil knows that he has to re-evaluate his current relationship. Is Inez the love of his life.

Midnight in Paris is a wonderful ode to the 'City of Light'. It shows the beauty by which so many artists were influenced. It's a wonderful surreal tale in which we become a bit acquainted with so many great artists of the past. Owen Wilson shines in his role as Gil. He will not earn Oscar, but this role fits him like a glove.

Super 8 (2011)

Het is altijd weer interessant wanneer er iets nieuws van J.J. Abrams verschijnt. De bedenker van Lost, Fringe, Cloverfield en regisseur van onder meer de Star Trek film uit 2009. Wanneer blijkt dat Steven Spielberg de producer is, dan weet je dat je de film gewoon wilt zien. Beide namen zorgen over het algemeen namelijk voor voldoende spektakel.

De film speelt zich af eind jaren zeventig. Een stel vrienden is vastberaden om hun zombie amateur-film op tijd af te krijgen voor het regionale filmfestival. Met een super-8-camera in de hand wordt een scène geschoten op het perron van het plaatselijke pittoreske stationnetje. Tijdens het draaien vind er een bizarre trein-crash plaats. Wat volgt is een opeenstapeling van mysterieuze verdwijningen. Al snel blijkt dat dat de geheimzinnige lading van de trein hiermee te maken heeft.

Super 8 is in zekere zin meer dan een sci-fi-actie film. De film laat prachtig de verstoorde relatie tussen Joe en zijn vader zien. Dit element heeft zeker een toegevoegde waarde voor de film. Daarnaast blijkt overduidelijk dat de filmmaker zich heeft willen laten beïnvloeden door een aantal films uit de jaren 70 en 80. Denk aan films als 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', maar ook een film als 'Stand By Me'. Super 8 is een prima ode aan deze film-periode.

It's always interesting when something new from JJ Abrams appears. The creator of Lost, Fringe, Cloverfield and director of the Star Trek movie from 2009. When also becomes clear that Steven Spielberg is the producer, then you know you just want to see the movie. Both directors have quite some interesting movies under their belt.

The film is set in the late seventies. A group of friends is determined to finish their amateur zombie movie in time to show it at the regional film festival. With a super-8 camera in hand, a scene is shot on the picturesque platform of the local train-station. While shooting the scene a bizarre train crash takes place. What follows is an accumulation of mysterious disappearances. It soon becomes apparent that the mysterious cargo of the train has something to do with this.

Super 8 is in a sense more than a sci-fi action movie. The film shows beautifully the disturbed relationship between Joe and his father. This element is certainly an added value for the film. Furthermore, it is abundantly clear that the filmmaker is influenced by a number of films from the 70s and 80s. Think of films like 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', but also a movie like 'Stand By Me'. Super 8 is a great tribute to movies from this period.
