Rabat (2011)

Het was eigenlijk pas de uitreikingen van de Gouden Kalveren waarbij Rabat mijn aandacht kreeg. Nasrdin Dchar kreeg een Gouden Kalf voor Beste Mannelijke Hoofdrol. Daarnaast werd de film door vele aanwezigen getipt tot beste film van het afgelopen jaar. Toch bijzonder voor een dergelijke kleine productie.
De film Rabat is een Road-movie over 3 vrienden die naar de gelijknamige Marrokaanse stad reizen. Nadir moet zijn vaders oude taxi naar Rabat toebrengen. Hoewel Nadir zijn twee beste vrienden uitdrukkelijk vertelde om niet mee te gaan, besloten ze om toch te komen. Ze hebben toch niets beters te doen. Hun reis gaat door België, Frankrijk en Spanje om uiteindelijk met de boot in Marokko aan te komen. Op hun reis richting het zuiden ontmoeten ze nieuwe vrienden, zien ze nieuwe landschappen, maar meer nog ontdekken ze wie ze als vrienden voor elkaar zijn.
Rabat is een sterke Road-movie. Hoewel het voldoet aan alle eisen, weet het zich toch te onderscheidden van andere films binnen dit genre. Daarnaast weet de film duidelijk diepere karakters neer te zetten dan de multiculturele films die Nederland al kent. Rabat is een prachtige film over vriendschap, familie en volwassen worden. Rabat is een puik debuut.

It was only at the ceremonies of the Golden Calves (Dutch Film Awards) that Rabat got my attention. Nasrdin Dchar received a Golden Calf for Best Actor. In addition, the film was tipped by many attendees as the best film of the year. Very special for such a small production.
The film Rabat is a road movie about three friends who travel to the Morocco. Nadir has to bring his father's old taxis to Rabat. Although Nadir told his two best friends explicitly not to come along, they decided to come anyway. They didn't have anything better to do anyway. Their journey goes through Belgium, France and Spain and finally by boat they arrive in Morocco. On their journey south, they meet new friends, they see new landscapes, but even more they discover who they are as friends.
Rabat is a strong road-movie. Although it meets all the requirements, it is differed from other films in this genre. In addition, the film has well-depth characters. Way better than the multicultural movies Netherlands already has. Rabat is a beautiful movie about friendship, family and growing up. Rabat is a very good debut.

The Tree Of Life (2011)

"De nonnen leerden ons dat er twee wegen zijn in het leven - de weg van de natuur en de weg van genade. Je moet kiezen welke je zult volgen. Genade probeert niet om zichzelf te behagen. Ze aanvaardt de minachting, negeren, afkeer. Ze accepteert beledigingen en verwondingen. De natuur wil alleen zichzelf behagen en zorgt ervoor dat anderen dit ook doen. Zij wil hen overheersen. Zij wil haar eigen zin doorzetten. Zij vindt redenen om ongelukkig te zijn wanneer de hele wereld schijnt en liefde lacht door alle dingen heen." Met deze woorden begint The Tree Of Life. Alleen daarover al kan je urenlang filosoferen. De film laat deze twee wegen zien door de ogen van de 11-jarige Jack.
We zien een volwassen Jack die nog altijd worstelt met zijn verleden. Hij blikt terug op zijn jeugd. Hierin is heel duidelijk het bovengenoemde principe terug te vinden. Hij herinnert zich zijn moeder die de weg van genade bewandelde. Zij leerde hem wat liefde, vergeving en vreugde is. Zijn vader verpersoonlijkt de weg van de natuur. Hij probeert zijn zoon met harde hand klaar te maken voor de hardheid van het leven.
Dat The Tree Of Life een spirituele film is moge duidelijk zijn. Er wordt niet alleen nog een citaat uit job 38:4,7 aangehaald. Ook staat de vraag 'waarom God dingen toelaat' centraal in de film. Naast alle inhoudelijke aspecten van de film moet zeker ook gezegd worden dat het camerawerk fenomenaal is en de muziekkeuze schitterend past bij de film. Of The Tree Of Life de terechte winnaar van de Gouden Palm is, daar zullen de meningen over verdeelt blijven. Een feit is in ieder geval dat regisseur Terence Malick ons met The Tree Of Life genoeg stof tot nadenken heeft gegeven.

" The nuns taught us there were two ways through life - the way of nature and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you'll follow. Grace doesn't try to please itself. Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked. Accepts insults and injuries. Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy when all the world is shining around it. And love is smiling through all things." With these words The Tree of Life begins. Just about this quote you can philosophize for hours. The film shows these two paths through the eyes of the 11-year-old Jack.
We see an adult Jack who still struggles with his past. He looks back on his youth. It is very clear the principle above can be found. He remembers his mother who walked the way of grace. She taught him love, forgiveness and joy. His father personifies the way of nature. He tries to prepare his son for the harshness of life. This often came with violence.
The Tree of Life is in many ways a spiritual film, that is obvious. Not only a Job 38:4,7 is quoted. Also the question "why God allows things" is central in the movie. Besides all the themes of the film should definitely be said that the camera work is phenomenal and the choice of music fits beautifully in the film. Is The Tree of Life the rightful winner of the Palme d'or? People will remain divided opinions about that. The fact is that director Terence Malick has given us plenty to think about with The Tree of Life.

Des Hommes Et Des Dieux (2010)

Des Hommes Et Des Dieux speelt zich af in het Maghrebijnse gebergte in Algerije in de jaren 90. Een groep fransen monniken leven daar aan de rand van een klein islamitisch dorpje. Ze zijn helemaal onderdeel van het dorpsleven. Ze helpen de bewoners van het dorp met hun werkzaamheden, staan met een kraam op de markt, nemen deel aan hun festiviteiten. Daarnaast functioneert een van de monniken als plaatselijke huisarts.
Het terreur en geweld in het land neemt toe en het is slechts een kwestie van tijd tot het geweld ook hun afgelegen dorp bereikt. De Franse overheid raad hun aan om het land te verlaten en terug te keren naar hun vaderland. De monniken worden voor een ingewikkelde keuze gezet. Moeten ze in Algerije blijven? Het land waar God hun een missie heeft gegeven. Of moeten ze kiezen voor hun eigen veiligheid en terugkeren naar eigen land.
De film laat schitterend het leven van de monniken zien, de rituelen, de gebruiken, het dagritme. De besluitvorming over hun toekomst in Algerije is prachtig neergezet en buitengewoon boeiend. De regisseur laat prachtig zien hoe ieder van hen worstelt met dezelfde vraag, maar allemaal op een andere manier hiermee omgaat. Een verhaal van geloof, liefde, toewijding en moed. Een terechte winnaar van 3 'Césars' en de 'Grand Prix' in Cannes.

Des Hommes Et Des Dieux takes place in the 90's in the Maghreb mountains in Algeria. A group of French monks living there at the edge of a small Muslim village. They are all part of village life. They help the villagers with their work, sell homemade honey at the market, take part in their festivities. Besides one of the monks provides them medical care.
The terror and violence in the country is increasing and it is only a matter of time before the violence reache their remote village. The French embassy advise them to leave the country and return to their homeland. The monks are facing a difficult complicated choice. Should they stay in Algeria? The country where God gave them a mission. Or should they opt for their own safety and return to their home country.
The film gives us a beautiful view into the lives of the monsk. We see the rituals, customs, daily routine. Also their decision on their future in Algeria is beautifully put down and very interesting. The director shows us how each of them struggles with the same question, but all deal with it in a different way. A story of faith, love, devotion and courage. A deserved winner of 3 'Césars' and 'Grand Prix' at the Cannes filmfestival.

The Fighter (2010)

Dicky Ecklund is voormalig bokser en beter bekend als "The Pride of Lowell". Deze titel heeft hij te danken aan de memorabele overwinning op Sugar Ray Leonard. Tegenwoordig bestaat zijn leven voornamelijk uit drugs, dit terwijl hij eigenlijk zijn halfbroer Mickey Ward zou moeten trainen. De sportcarrière van Ward staat zo goed als stil. Dit voornamelijk door slecht management van zijn moeder die tevens manager is en het gebrek aan advies en training van zijn broer Dicky.
Wanneer zijn broer op een gegeven moment in de bak beland, besluit Mickey het roer om te gooien. Hij gaat op advies van zijn vader en vriendin in zee met een andere manager en trainer. Zijn carrière schiet eindelijk weer omhoog. Zijn familie problemen worden echter alleen maar groter. Helemaal wanneer ook Dicky weer wordt vrijgelaten en weer verwacht zijn trainer te worden.
The Fighter is een prachtige film, mede dankzij de fantastische acteerprestaties van Christian Bale en Melissa Leo. In de film zien we niet alleen de carrière sprong van Mickey Ward, maar ook het turbulente leven van Dicky Ecklund. Over hem wordt in de film een documentaire gemaakt. De documentaire is prachtig in de film geïntegreerd.
The Fighter is veel meer dan een boksfilm. Het is een intens drama over acceptatie, de strijd die Ward had met zijn familieleden. Een terechte winnaar van 2 Oscars. Misschien hadden dit er wel meer moeten zijn.

Dicky Ecklund is a former boxer and well known as "The Pride of Lowell". This title is thanks to his memorable victory on Sugar Ray Leonard. Today his life is mainly drugs, this while he actually needs to train his half-brother Mickey Ward. The sports career of Ward is slow. This mainly due to bad management of his mother, who is also manager, and the lack of advice and training from his brother Dicky.
When his brother at some point ends up in jail, Mickey decides to change his carreer. He takes the advice of his father and girlfriend and decides to go on with new manager and a new trainer. His career finally takes the big leap everyone is waiting for. His family problems however are only getting bigger. Especially when Dicky also is being released and expects to be his trainer again.
The Fighter is a great movie, thanks to the superb acting performances from Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. In the film we do not only follow the rise of Mickey Ward, but we also see the rise and fall of Dicky Ecklund. In this movie HBO is making a documentary about his life. The documentary is beautifully integrated into the film.
The Fighter is much more than a boxing movie. It is an intense drama about acceptance, the struggle that Ward had with his family. A rightful winner of 2 Oscars. Perhaps the movie should have won more.

Another Year (2010)

Mike Leigh heeft een buitengewoon boeiende manier van film maken. De regisseur begint over het algemeen alleen met een idee voor een script. Vervolgens gaat hij samen met de acteurs zitten om personages te creëren. Daarmee beginnen ze dan te improviseren. Langzaam maar zeker ontstaat er een script waarmee de film wordt gemaakt. Zijn films hebben inmiddels al aardig wat prijzen gekregen. Twee Gouden Palms in Cannes, een Leone d'Oro in Venetië en zeven Academy Award nominaties.
Net als veel van Mike Leigh's films gaat ook Another Year over het leven van alle dag. We volgen mensen in hun dagelijks leven. Tom woont met zijn vrouw Gerri in een rustige buitenwijk van London. Ze zijn gelukkig, doen veel samen en houden ontzettend veel van elkaar. De film volgt hen en hun vrienden door de seizoenen heen. Tom is geoloog van beroep en Gerri therapeut.
Een vriendin en collega van Gerri, Mary, heeft het een stuk minder. Ze probeert gezellig te doen, met iedereen een praatje maken, en is in iedereen geïnteresseerd, maar eigenlijk is ze erg eenzaam, en wanhopig. Ze lijkt haar gevoel weg te willen drinken. Mary komt vaak langs bij Tom en Gerri en is dol op hun zoon Joe. Wanneer Joe een vriendin mee naar huis neemt, geeft dit de nodige problemen. Haar leven lijkt ineen te storten.
Another Year is een prachtige film over het leven van alle dag. Het is een film die de oneerlijke verschillen van het leven laat zien, gelukkig en ongelukkig, samen zijn en eenzaamheid, maar ook leven en dood. Gerri en Tom beseffen heel goed hoe mooi hun leven is. Het is dan ook buitengewoon boeiend om de warme, huiselijke, behulpzame houding van dit echtpaar te volgen. Another Year is een intense film over het leven van alle dag.

Mike Leigh has a very interesting way of making films. The director generally begins only with an idea for a script. Then he and the actors sit down to create characters. Thus they begin to improvise. Slowly but surely a script for the film arises. His films have had quite a few awards. Two Golden Palms in Cannes, a Leone d'Oro in Venice and seven Academy Award nominations.
Like many of Mike Leigh's films also Another Year is about everyday life. We follow people in their daily lives. Tom lives with his wife Gerri in a quiet suburb of London. They are happy, do a lot together and love each other very much. The film follows them and their friends throughout the seasons. Tom is a geologist by profession and Gerri therapist.
A friend and colleague of Gerri, Mary, has a lot less. She tries to make nice chat with everyone, and is interested in them, but meanwhile she is very lonely and desperate. She seems to want to drink away her feelings. Mary often visits Tom and Gerri and their son Joe. When Joe brings home a girlfriend, Mary seems to breakdown.
Another Year is a wonderful film about the everyday life. It is a film that shows the unfair differences of life, happy and unhappy, togetherness and loneliness, but also life and death. Gerri and Tom are well aware how beautiful their life is. It is therefore particularly interesting to follow their warm, homey, helpful attitude of this couple. Another Year is an intense film about the everyday life.

Black Swan (2010)

Black Swan verteld het verhaal van Nina, een getalenteerde balletdanseres die altijd in de schaduw van anderen heeft gestaan. Nina krijgt van artistiek directeur Thomas Leroy de kans om Swan Queen te spelen, wat inhoud dat ze zowel de witte als zwarte zwaan mag spelen. Al snel wordt duidelijk dat ze uitermate geschikt is om de witte zwaan, die staat voor onschuld en schoonheid, te spelen, maar is ze ook in staat om de rol van zwarte zwaan onder de knie te krijgen.
Nina zet alles op alles om de rol van zwarte zwaan, welke staat voor bedrog en verleiding, onder de knie te krijgen. Art director Leroy heeft echter sterk zijn twijfels of ze wel in staat is om de rol als zwarte zwaan te vertolken. De druk wordt alsmaar groter, helemaal wanneer Leroy laat blijken dat er nog een kandidaat is om Swan Queen te spelen. De vraag is echter of ze dit alles psychisch wel aan kan. Wat volgt is een schaduwspel in het hoofd van Nina. Het is lang niet altijd duidelijk voor Nina wat nu realiteit is. Meer en meer lijkt de zwarte zwaan bezit van haar te nemen. Waanzin lijkt de plaats in te nemen van schoonheid die eens zo mooi zichtbaar was in de witte zwaan.
Regisseur Darren Aronofsky heeft al eerder laten zien met zijn meesterwerk Requiem For A Dream dat hij in staat is om het surrealisme wat zich kan afspelen in de psyche te laten zien op het witte doek. Zijn nieuwste film Black Swan is daarin zeer geslaagd. Ook de rol van Natalie Portman is prachtig. Niet voor niets kreeg ze hiervoor een oscar. Black Swan is een prachtige combinatie van ballet en een psychologisch thriller geworden. Misschien wel het beste werk van Darren Aronofsky.

Black Swan tells the story of Nina, a talented ballet dancer who always has been in the shadow of other dancers. Artistic director Thomas Leroy gives Nina the opportunity to play Swan Queen, which means playing both white and black swan. It is clear that she is the ideal character to play the white swan, which stands for innocence and beauty, but is she also capable of playing the role of black swan.
Nina is doing everything to master the role of black swan, which represents deception and temptation. Art director Leroy has strong doubts whether she is capable of acting as the black swan. The pressure continues to grow, especially when Leroy implies there is another candidate to play Swan Queen. Is she able to handle the pressure. What follows is a shadow play in the mind of Nina. It is not always clear what is reality for Nina. More and more the black swan takes possession of her. Madness seems to take the place of beauty that was once was so beautifully visible in the white swan.
Director Darren Aronofsky has already shown in his masterpiece Requiem For A Dream that he is capable of showing the surrealism of the psyche on screen. His latest film Black Swan is also very successful in capturing this element on film. The role of Natalie Portman is beautiful. Without a doubt she deserved that oscar for this role. Black Swan is a wonderful combination of ballet and a psychological thriller. Perhaps the best work of Darren Aronofsky.

Biutiful (2010)

Het was lang wachten op nieuw werk van regisseur Iñárritu. Zijn laatste film Babel dateert alweer uit 2006. De regisseur die naast deze film ook 21 Grams en Amores Perros op zijn naam heeft staan, was ditmaal naast de regie ook verantwoordelijk voor het script. Waar zijn vorige films allemaal mozaïek films waren met meerdere hoofdpersonen, is in deze film gekozen voor één hoofdpersoon.
Uxbal is een sjacheraar, een soort van tussenhandelaar. Hij vormt de schakel tussen een illegaal Chinees naaiatelier en eveneens illegale Afrikaanse straatverkopers in Barcelona. Naast dit hectische bestaan is Uxbal ook verantwoordelijk voor de opvoeding van zijn twee kinderen Ana en Mateo. Hun Moeder is manisch depressief en niet in staat te zorgen voor de kinderen, hoewel ze graag betrokken is bij de opvoeding. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, krijgt Uxbal te horen dat hij kanker heeft en nog maar een paar maanden te leven heeft. In de korte tijd die hij nog te leven heeft probeert hij zo goed mogelijk alles achter te laten en af te sluiten.
Voor het eerst laat regisseur Iñárritu de mozaïekvertelling los. In die zin is Biutiful erg verschillend van zijn voorgangers. Toch is duidelijk het kenmerk van Iñárritu terug te vinden in de film. Eigenlijk gaan al zijn films tot dus ver over verlossing, over los komen van je oude bestaan en over liefde. Zo ook in Biutiful. Het acteerwerk van Javier Bardem is fenomenaal. Zijn karakter is wat deze film maakt. Na Amores Perros, 21 Grams en Babel weet Iñárritu wederom een fantastische film af te leveren.

It was a long wait for new work from director Iñárritu. His latest film Babel dates back from 2006. The director who also is responsible for 21 Grams and Amores Perros did not only direct Biutiful but also wrote the script. Where his previous films were all mosaic films with several main characters, in this movie is chosen for one main character.
Uxbal is a huckster, a sort of intermediary. He is the link between an illegal Chinese sewing shop and also illegal African street vendors in Barcelona. In addition to this hectic life, Uxbal is also responsible for the upbringing of his two children Ana and Mateo. Their mother is manic depressive and unable to take care for the children, although she likes to be involved in the upbringing. If that was not enough, Uxbal has been told he has cancer and only has a few months to live. In the short time he has he tries to make everything to close as good as he can.
For the first time, director Iñárritu leaves the mosaic narrative. From that point of view Biutiful is very different from its predecessors. Yet clearly the characteristics of Iñárritu are present in the film. All his films so far are about redemption, about letting your old life go and love. You will find these elements also in Biutiful. The acting of Javier Bardem is phenomenal. His character is what makes this movie. After Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel Iñárritu once again delivers us a great movie.
