Another Year (2010)

Mike Leigh heeft een buitengewoon boeiende manier van film maken. De regisseur begint over het algemeen alleen met een idee voor een script. Vervolgens gaat hij samen met de acteurs zitten om personages te creëren. Daarmee beginnen ze dan te improviseren. Langzaam maar zeker ontstaat er een script waarmee de film wordt gemaakt. Zijn films hebben inmiddels al aardig wat prijzen gekregen. Twee Gouden Palms in Cannes, een Leone d'Oro in Venetië en zeven Academy Award nominaties.
Net als veel van Mike Leigh's films gaat ook Another Year over het leven van alle dag. We volgen mensen in hun dagelijks leven. Tom woont met zijn vrouw Gerri in een rustige buitenwijk van London. Ze zijn gelukkig, doen veel samen en houden ontzettend veel van elkaar. De film volgt hen en hun vrienden door de seizoenen heen. Tom is geoloog van beroep en Gerri therapeut.
Een vriendin en collega van Gerri, Mary, heeft het een stuk minder. Ze probeert gezellig te doen, met iedereen een praatje maken, en is in iedereen geïnteresseerd, maar eigenlijk is ze erg eenzaam, en wanhopig. Ze lijkt haar gevoel weg te willen drinken. Mary komt vaak langs bij Tom en Gerri en is dol op hun zoon Joe. Wanneer Joe een vriendin mee naar huis neemt, geeft dit de nodige problemen. Haar leven lijkt ineen te storten.
Another Year is een prachtige film over het leven van alle dag. Het is een film die de oneerlijke verschillen van het leven laat zien, gelukkig en ongelukkig, samen zijn en eenzaamheid, maar ook leven en dood. Gerri en Tom beseffen heel goed hoe mooi hun leven is. Het is dan ook buitengewoon boeiend om de warme, huiselijke, behulpzame houding van dit echtpaar te volgen. Another Year is een intense film over het leven van alle dag.

Mike Leigh has a very interesting way of making films. The director generally begins only with an idea for a script. Then he and the actors sit down to create characters. Thus they begin to improvise. Slowly but surely a script for the film arises. His films have had quite a few awards. Two Golden Palms in Cannes, a Leone d'Oro in Venice and seven Academy Award nominations.
Like many of Mike Leigh's films also Another Year is about everyday life. We follow people in their daily lives. Tom lives with his wife Gerri in a quiet suburb of London. They are happy, do a lot together and love each other very much. The film follows them and their friends throughout the seasons. Tom is a geologist by profession and Gerri therapist.
A friend and colleague of Gerri, Mary, has a lot less. She tries to make nice chat with everyone, and is interested in them, but meanwhile she is very lonely and desperate. She seems to want to drink away her feelings. Mary often visits Tom and Gerri and their son Joe. When Joe brings home a girlfriend, Mary seems to breakdown.
Another Year is a wonderful film about the everyday life. It is a film that shows the unfair differences of life, happy and unhappy, togetherness and loneliness, but also life and death. Gerri and Tom are well aware how beautiful their life is. It is therefore particularly interesting to follow their warm, homey, helpful attitude of this couple. Another Year is an intense film about the everyday life.

Black Swan (2010)

Black Swan verteld het verhaal van Nina, een getalenteerde balletdanseres die altijd in de schaduw van anderen heeft gestaan. Nina krijgt van artistiek directeur Thomas Leroy de kans om Swan Queen te spelen, wat inhoud dat ze zowel de witte als zwarte zwaan mag spelen. Al snel wordt duidelijk dat ze uitermate geschikt is om de witte zwaan, die staat voor onschuld en schoonheid, te spelen, maar is ze ook in staat om de rol van zwarte zwaan onder de knie te krijgen.
Nina zet alles op alles om de rol van zwarte zwaan, welke staat voor bedrog en verleiding, onder de knie te krijgen. Art director Leroy heeft echter sterk zijn twijfels of ze wel in staat is om de rol als zwarte zwaan te vertolken. De druk wordt alsmaar groter, helemaal wanneer Leroy laat blijken dat er nog een kandidaat is om Swan Queen te spelen. De vraag is echter of ze dit alles psychisch wel aan kan. Wat volgt is een schaduwspel in het hoofd van Nina. Het is lang niet altijd duidelijk voor Nina wat nu realiteit is. Meer en meer lijkt de zwarte zwaan bezit van haar te nemen. Waanzin lijkt de plaats in te nemen van schoonheid die eens zo mooi zichtbaar was in de witte zwaan.
Regisseur Darren Aronofsky heeft al eerder laten zien met zijn meesterwerk Requiem For A Dream dat hij in staat is om het surrealisme wat zich kan afspelen in de psyche te laten zien op het witte doek. Zijn nieuwste film Black Swan is daarin zeer geslaagd. Ook de rol van Natalie Portman is prachtig. Niet voor niets kreeg ze hiervoor een oscar. Black Swan is een prachtige combinatie van ballet en een psychologisch thriller geworden. Misschien wel het beste werk van Darren Aronofsky.

Black Swan tells the story of Nina, a talented ballet dancer who always has been in the shadow of other dancers. Artistic director Thomas Leroy gives Nina the opportunity to play Swan Queen, which means playing both white and black swan. It is clear that she is the ideal character to play the white swan, which stands for innocence and beauty, but is she also capable of playing the role of black swan.
Nina is doing everything to master the role of black swan, which represents deception and temptation. Art director Leroy has strong doubts whether she is capable of acting as the black swan. The pressure continues to grow, especially when Leroy implies there is another candidate to play Swan Queen. Is she able to handle the pressure. What follows is a shadow play in the mind of Nina. It is not always clear what is reality for Nina. More and more the black swan takes possession of her. Madness seems to take the place of beauty that was once was so beautifully visible in the white swan.
Director Darren Aronofsky has already shown in his masterpiece Requiem For A Dream that he is capable of showing the surrealism of the psyche on screen. His latest film Black Swan is also very successful in capturing this element on film. The role of Natalie Portman is beautiful. Without a doubt she deserved that oscar for this role. Black Swan is a wonderful combination of ballet and a psychological thriller. Perhaps the best work of Darren Aronofsky.

Biutiful (2010)

Het was lang wachten op nieuw werk van regisseur Iñárritu. Zijn laatste film Babel dateert alweer uit 2006. De regisseur die naast deze film ook 21 Grams en Amores Perros op zijn naam heeft staan, was ditmaal naast de regie ook verantwoordelijk voor het script. Waar zijn vorige films allemaal mozaïek films waren met meerdere hoofdpersonen, is in deze film gekozen voor één hoofdpersoon.
Uxbal is een sjacheraar, een soort van tussenhandelaar. Hij vormt de schakel tussen een illegaal Chinees naaiatelier en eveneens illegale Afrikaanse straatverkopers in Barcelona. Naast dit hectische bestaan is Uxbal ook verantwoordelijk voor de opvoeding van zijn twee kinderen Ana en Mateo. Hun Moeder is manisch depressief en niet in staat te zorgen voor de kinderen, hoewel ze graag betrokken is bij de opvoeding. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, krijgt Uxbal te horen dat hij kanker heeft en nog maar een paar maanden te leven heeft. In de korte tijd die hij nog te leven heeft probeert hij zo goed mogelijk alles achter te laten en af te sluiten.
Voor het eerst laat regisseur Iñárritu de mozaïekvertelling los. In die zin is Biutiful erg verschillend van zijn voorgangers. Toch is duidelijk het kenmerk van Iñárritu terug te vinden in de film. Eigenlijk gaan al zijn films tot dus ver over verlossing, over los komen van je oude bestaan en over liefde. Zo ook in Biutiful. Het acteerwerk van Javier Bardem is fenomenaal. Zijn karakter is wat deze film maakt. Na Amores Perros, 21 Grams en Babel weet Iñárritu wederom een fantastische film af te leveren.

It was a long wait for new work from director Iñárritu. His latest film Babel dates back from 2006. The director who also is responsible for 21 Grams and Amores Perros did not only direct Biutiful but also wrote the script. Where his previous films were all mosaic films with several main characters, in this movie is chosen for one main character.
Uxbal is a huckster, a sort of intermediary. He is the link between an illegal Chinese sewing shop and also illegal African street vendors in Barcelona. In addition to this hectic life, Uxbal is also responsible for the upbringing of his two children Ana and Mateo. Their mother is manic depressive and unable to take care for the children, although she likes to be involved in the upbringing. If that was not enough, Uxbal has been told he has cancer and only has a few months to live. In the short time he has he tries to make everything to close as good as he can.
For the first time, director Iñárritu leaves the mosaic narrative. From that point of view Biutiful is very different from its predecessors. Yet clearly the characteristics of Iñárritu are present in the film. All his films so far are about redemption, about letting your old life go and love. You will find these elements also in Biutiful. The acting of Javier Bardem is phenomenal. His character is what makes this movie. After Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel Iñárritu once again delivers us a great movie.

Exit Through The Gift Shop (2010)

Thierry Guetta is filmmaker. Niet zo zeer qua beroep, maar het is zijn leven. Zijn camera is als het ware vergroeid met zijn hand. Waar hij ook heen is, er staat een camera aan. Wanneer hij op een gegeven moment zijn neef, de street-artist 'Space Invader', filmt, raakt hij geobsedeerd door het leven van deze vorm van kunst. Hij filmt alles en iedereen en raakt al filmend steeds dieper in de wereld van de street-artists. Hij filmt het nachtleven waarin zij met spuitbussen, posters en Behang-lijm de straten langs gaan, opzoek naar perfecte muur.
Op een gegeven moment is er nog maar één kunstenaar die hij nog niet heeft kunnen filmen, namelijk: Banksy. Hij staat bekend om zijn vaak politiek georiënteerde kunstwerken. Thierry probeert al jaren om Banksy te kunnen bereiken, maar deze blijkt onvindbaar en mede-artiesten willen zijn schuilplaats niet onthullen.
Uiteindelijk neemt Banksy tot Thierry's verbazing juist contact op met hem. Hij is namelijk de man die alle juiste muren weet te vinden in Los Angeles. Nadat Thierry Banksy's vertrouwen heeft weten te winnen, besluit Banksy de rollen om te draaien. Banksy gaat een film maken over de street-artist Thierry, die de naam Mr. Brainwash adopteert. Wat begint als een eerlijk, oprechte documentaire over street-art wordt plotseling een documentaire over de excentrieke Thierry Guetta. Dat Thierry Guetta duidelijk geïnspireerd is door street-artists als Banksy, maar ook Shepard Fairey moge duidelijk zijn. Zeker is dat, Thierry binnen no-time onder de naam Mr. Brainwash zichzelf op de kaart wist te zetten.
"Exit Through the Gift Shop" is meer dan een documentaire over street-art. Het laat niet alleen het leven en werk van deze kunstenaars zien, maar ook hoe street-art meer en meer een geaccepteerde kunstvorm is geworden. De vraag is echter of deze film een documentaire is of dat het in scène is gezet. Echt of niet, Banksy heeft met "Exit Through The Gift Shop" een prima (nep)documentaire afgeleverd.

Thierry Guetta is a filmmaker. Not in terms of profession, but it is his life. His camera is like grown with his hand. Wherever he is, there is a camera. At one point he starts filming his cousin, the street artist "Space Invader", he becomes obsessed with the life of street-art. He films everything and everyone. While filming he gets deeper and deeper into the world of street-artists. He films the night life in which they go with spray cans, posters and wallpaper glue along the streets, looking for perfect wall.
At one point there is only one artist he has not been able to film yet, Banksy. He is known for his often politically oriented art. Thierry has been trying to reach Banksy for years, but almost appears to be impossible to find him. Fellow artists don't know where he is or don't want to reveal his hideout.
To his surprise at one point Banksy contacts Thierry. He had heard that Thierry is the man that knows all the right walls in Los Angeles. After Thierry wins the trust of Banksy, Banksy suggests to switch rolls. Thierry becomes the artist and Banksy the filmer. Banksy's film is about the street-artist Thierry, who adopts the alias Mr. Brainwash. What begins as an honest, heartfelt documentary about street art is suddenly a documentary about the eccentric Thierry Guetta. It is obvious that Thierry Guetta clearly is inspired by street artists like Banksy, Shepard Fairey. In no time Mr. Brainwash manages to put his name on the map.

"Exit Through the Gift Shop" is more than a documentary about street art. It shows not only the life and work of these artists, but also how street-art increasingly has become an accepted art form. The question is whether this film is a documentary or that it was put in scene. Real or not, Banksy has "Exit Through The Gift Shop" a good (fake) documentary delivered.

The Social Network (2010)

Een film over Facebook. Willen mensen dat überhaupt zien. In eerste instantie was ik enigszins sceptisch over het idee. Toen duidelijk werd dat David Fincher de regie op zich zou nemen, werd ik al wat gunstiger gestemd. David Fincher heeft inmiddels met Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac en The Curious Case of Benjamin Button bewezen goede films af te kunnen leveren.
"You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies" prijkt op de film posters. En juist dat is de rode draad in deze film.
De film verteld het leven van de, door Jesse Eisenberg gespeelde, oprichter van Facebook Mark Zuckerberg. De jonge Harvard student is sociaal niet de meest handige. Na een mislukte date, besluit hij in een dronken bui samen met zijn vriend Eduardo Saverin Facemash op te richten. Een site waarop men telkens 2 Harvard studentes te zien krijgt en moet kiezen wie de mooiste is. De site is zo'n succes dat binnen een uur de hele Harvard network plat ligt.
Zijn hack-actie blijft niet onopgemerkt. De rijke broers Winklevoss vragen hem mee te werken aan een online dating site voor Harvard studenten. Hij lijkt hier wel interesse in te hebben, maar uiteindelijk blijkt mee een veel beter idee te krijgen, namelijk een 'Social Network' site. Facebook is geboren, maar is nog alles behalve een zeker concept. Wat volgt is een serie van rechtszaken en conflicten.
"The Social Network" zit erg goed in elkaar. De rechtszaken worden gebruikt om heen en weer te kunnen springen in het verhaal. Het maakt hierdoor niet uit dat er wat gaten in de tijdlijn zitten. Het acteerwerk van Jesse Eisenberg is fantastisch en zeer geloofwaardig. Het verhaal zit vol sterke dialogen. De soundtrack voegt daarnaast ook veel sfeer toe aan de film. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat "The Social Network" zeker bij de beste films van 2010 hoort.

A film about Facebook. Do people even want to see that at all. At first I was somewhat skeptical about the idea. When i heard that director David Fincher would make this movie, I became somewhat more positive about the idea. David Fincher has proven to be a great director with movies like Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
"You do not get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies" is imprinted on the film posters. And that is the main theme in this movie.
The film tells the life, played by Jesse Eisenberg, of the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The young Harvard student is socially not the most successful. After a failed date, he decides, in a drunken brawl, with his friend Eduardo Saverin to make Facemash. A website where one sees two Harvard students and must choose who is the most beautiful. The site is so successful that within one hour the whole Harvard network is down.
His hack action does not go unnoticed. The rich Winklevoss brothers ask him to work on an online dating site for Harvard students. He seems to be interested, but ends up with a better idea, namely a "Social Network" site. Facebook is born, but it is still far from a certain concept. What follows is a series of lawsuits and conflicts.
"The Social Network" is Beautifully crafted. The trials are used to jump back and forth in the story. This way it doens't matter that there are gaps in the timeline. The acting of Jesse Eisenberg is fantastic and very believable. The story is full of sharp dialogue. The soundtrack also adds great atmosphere to the movie. great atmosphere. It is clear that "The Social Network" certainly deserves to be among the best movies of 2010.

Tron: Legacy (2010)

Bij het zien van de trailer aan het begin van de zomer van 2010 was mijn interesse meteen al gewekt. De donkerheid van de trailer, de blauwe lichten, de mysterieus kant. Niet wetend dat mijn enthousiasme voor deze film alleen maar groter zou worden. Niet zo zeer vanwege de film, maar vooral vanwege de soundtrack van Daft Punk.
Sam Flynn is de zoon van de beroemde computerprogrammeur Kevin Flynn. Op een dag komt Kevin Flynn na zijn werk niet meer thuis. Hij lijkt van de aardbodem te zijn verdwenen. 20 jaar later krijgt Sam bezoek van Allen, een oud-collega van zijn vader. Hij beweert dat zijn vader nog steeds leeft en dat hij op zoek moet gaan naar sporen in de voormalig arcade-hal van zijn vader. Net als in de oude film Tron wordt hij opgezogen door een digitale camera in een virtuele wereld. Sam gaat op zoek naar zijn vader. Al snel blijkt dat het makkelijker is om in deze wereld terecht te komen dan deze te ontsnappen.
Tron: Legacy is een prachtige ervaring. De virtuele wereld is prachtig neergezet en weet door haar donkere tinten en blauwe lichten een prachtige sfeer neer te zetten. Ook de fenomenale soundtrack van Daft Punk werkt hier zeker aan mee en is misschien nog wel het hoogtepunt van deze film. Ook het feit dat de film in 3-D beschikbaar is werkt goed. Dit komt vooral mooi uit de verf in de virtuele wereld, maar ook de diepte shots aan het begin van de film zijn erg mooi. Tron: Legacy is prima vermaak, maar zal niet de boeken in gaan als klassieker.

When i saw the trailer for the first time at the beginning of the summer of 2010 it had caught my interest straight away. The darkness of the trailer, the blue lights, the mysteriousness. Not knowing that my enthusiasm for this film would only increase. Not so much because of the film, but mainly because of Daft Punk's soundtrack.
Sam Flynn is the son of the famous computer programmer Kevin Flynn. One day Kevin Flynn doesn't come home after his day of work. It seems he is vanished. 20 years later, Sam gets a visit from Allen, a former colleague of his father. He claims that his father is still alive and that he must look for traces in the former arcade hall of his father. As in the old movie Tron, he is sucked up by a digital camera in a virtual world. Sam goes looking for his father. It soon becomes apparent that it is easier to end up in this world than to escape it.
Tron: Legacy is a wonderful experience. The virtual world is beautiful crafted. Her dark shades and blue lights give a beautiful atmosphere. The phenomenal soundtrack of Daft Punk is also a big element for the beautiful atmosphere and it is certainly one of the big highlights of this film. The fact that the film is available in 3-D works well. Especially in the virtual world, but also the depth of shots at the beginning of the movie are very beautiful. Tron: Legacy is very entertaining but it will not go down in history as a classic.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

December is altijd weer een maand om naar uit te kijken. Niet alleen vanwege sinterklaas, kerst en de jaarwisseling, maar zeker ook vanwege de jaarlijstjes. Elk jaar gebeurd het wel weer dat ik een paar films over het hoofd heb gezien. "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was daar één van. En terecht dat deze film in de jaarlijstjes terug te vinden is.
Scott Pilgrim is een 23 jarige jongen die naast zijn werkloze bestaan bas speelt in de band "Sex Bob-Omb". Sinds kort heeft hij weer een vriendin, de 17 jarige Chinese Knives Chau, die door iedereen in zijn omgeving wordt afgekeurd vanwege haar leeftijd. Alles lijkt goed te gaan, totdat hij een droom krijgt over de vrouw van zijn leven. Tot zijn schrik komt hij haar de volgende dag tegen en wordt hij op slag tot over zijn oren verliefd op haar. Scott doet zijn uiterste best om een date met Ramona Flowers, zoals ze heet, te krijgen. Dit gaat echter niet zomaar. Om haar hart te kunnen winnen zal Scott moeten vechten tegen "De zeven kwaadaardige exen" van Ramona.
Deze film is gebaseerd op de comicbook serie Scott Pilgrim, geschreven door de Canadees Bryan Lee O'Malley. Al vanaf de openings-theme van Universal is duidelijk dat het niet een gewone comicbook-verfilming is, maar zeker ook een ode aan videogames en de Nintendo-generatie. Edgar Wright, regisseur van onder meer "Shaun of the Dead" en "Hot Fuzz", Is er zeer in geslaagd om deze sfeer over te brengen op de kijker. Het tempo van de film ligt hoog. We switchen van droom naar realiteit en weer terug. Terecht één van de betere films van 2010.

December is always a month to look forward to. Not only because of Santa Claus, Christmas and New Year, but also because of the year lists. Every year it happenes again. There are always a few films that I have missed. "Scott Pilgrim vs.. the World" was one of them. And this is definitely a movie that should be on those lists.
Scott Pilgrim is a 23 year old boy who is in between jobs and plays bass in the band "Sex Bob-Omb. Recently he has another girlfriend, a 17 year old Chinese girl named Knives Chau, which everyone around him rejects because of her age. Everything seems to go well until he dreams about the love of his life. To his shock he meets her the next day and immediately falls in love with her. Scott tries to get a date with the girl, who's name is Ramona Flowers. However, in order to win her heart Scott will have to fight "the seven evil exes" of Ramona.
This film is based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series, written by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley. Since the opening theme for Universal it is clearly not an ordinary comic book adaptation, but also definitely a tribute to video games and the Nintendo generation. Edgar Wright, director of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" has been very successful in bringing the sphere across to the viewer. The pace of the film is high. We switch from dream to reality and back again. Rightly one of the better films of 2010.
