Short Term 12 (2013)

Elk jaar zijn er wel een aantal Indie films/ Arthouse films die eruit springen. Een van die films was het afgelopen jaar de film Short Term 12. Regisseur/Schrijver Destin Cretton maakte een hartverwarmende film over de relatie tussen begeleiders en kinderen bij een pleegzorg instelling.

De zestien jarige Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) wordt tijdelijk opgenomen in de pleegzorg instelling Short Term 12, omdat de thuissituatie met haar vader niet meer te houden is. Ze wordt gekoppeld aan de nog jonge, maar zeer ervaren begeleider Grace (Brie Larson). Grace vermoedt dat Jayden thuis mishandeld wordt door haar vader.
Wanneer Jayden besluit weg te lopen van Short Term 12, neemt Grace, geleidt door haar eigen emoties, het heft in eigen handen en gaat op zoek naar het ware verhaal. De twee worden erg close met elkaar en de situatie lijkt meer dan een hulpverleningsrelatie te worden.

Short Term 12 is een intense film over de jeugdhulpverlening en specifiek pleegzorg. Gelukkig heeft regisseur Destin Daniel Cretton er geen melancholische zwarte film van gemaakt, maar heeft hij een prachtige balans gevonden tussen drama en feelgoodmomenten. Dikke pluim voor het goede acteerwerk van Brie Larson en Kaitlyn Dever. Alle goede reviews die Short Term 12 kreeg waren terecht. Het is een prachtige film met een prachtige boodschap van liefde.

Every year there are a few Indie films/Arthouse films that stand out. One of those films in the last year was the film Short Term 12. Director/Writer Destin Cretton made ​​a heartwarming drama about the relationship between mentors and children in a foster care home.

Sixteen-year-old Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) will be temporarily teken in the foster care home Short Term 12, because the situation at home together with her dad seems to be out of control. Jayden is linked to the still young but very experienced mentor Grace (Brie Larson). Grace suspects that Jayden is abused by her father.
When Jayden decides to walk away from Short Term 12, Grace, led by her own emotions, takes matters into her own hands and decides to go and search for the true story. Both girls open up to eachother and the two become very close. Their relationship seems to become friendship.

Short Term 12 is an intense movie about the youth healthcare, specifically foster care. Fortunately, director Destin Daniel Cretton decided not to make a melancholic black movie, but found a wonderful balance between drama and feel-good moments. A big compliment to Brie Larson and Kaitlyn Dever for their great acting. Short Term 12 definitely deserved all the great reviews it got. It's a wonderful movie, with a great message of love.

Monsters University (2013)

Als groot fan van Pixar films is het altijd weer uitkijken naar nieuwe films van de animatie studio. Al jaren lang is Pixar toonaangevend in hun vakgebied. Toch lijkt hun laatste trend niet het verzinnen van nieuwe karakters en omgevingen, maar terugpakken op eerdere films. Zo hadden we de laatste jaren één nieuw ontwikkelde film met Brave en twee sequels. Hoewel Toy Story 3 een prachtige film was, had Pixar duidelijk een off-day met Cars 2. Het was dan ook spannend hoe Monsters University het eraf zou brengen als prequel.

We reizen met een drietal karakters terug in de tijd, maar volgen voornamelijk de anti-held Mike Wazowski. We zien hoe de eenoog als kind zijn roeping vind tijdens een schoolreisje naar de Monsters Inc. Scare Factory. De onpopulaire Mike weet zich, onder het oog van zijn docent, te begeven op de 'Scare Floor' en zelfs in één van de bevreesde kinderkamers te geraken. Vanaf dat moment weet hij het zeker, hij zal de grootste 'Scarer' van Monstropolis worden.
Na een sprong in de tijd zien we Mike's aankomst op Monsters University, waar hij zijn roommate Randy, die we langzaamaan zien uitgroeien tot grootste rivaal van ‘Sulley’, ontmoet. Al snel wordt duidelijk dat Mike niks te zoeken heeft in het 'Scare Program' van Monsters University. Hier zien we ook de introductie van het karakter James P. Sullivan, een populaire nietsnut met een natuurlijke aanleg voor het vak. De nerdy Mike Wazowski en de nietsnut Sulley kunnen elkaar in eerst instantie niet luchten of zien, maar na een plotwending lijken de twee elkaar meer dan ooit nodig te hebben.

Hoewel Monsters University als film op zich een prima animatie is, moet ik zeggen dat de film bij lange na niet het niveau haalt van zijn voorganger. Monsters University pakt terug op eerder gemaakte grappen, standaard universiteits taferelen en lijkt goed te hebben opgelet hoe men in Harry Potterfilms te werk ging. Helaas werd mijn angst bevestigd en is Monsters University geen topper. Neemt niet weg dat het een prima vermakelijke film is.

As a big fan of Pixar films i always look forward to a new movie from the animation studio. For years Pixar us leader in their fields. Yet their latest trend doesn't seem to be developing new characters and creativity, but falling back on previous films. The last few years Pixar released only one new developed movie (Brave) and two sequels. While Toy Story 3 was a great movie, Pixar clearly had an off-day with Cars 2. It could go either way with Monsters University.

We travel back in time with three characters from Monsters Inc., but we mainly follow the anti-hero Mike Wazowski. We see how the one-eyed green ball as a child finds his calling during a school trip to the 'Monsters Inc. Scare Factory'. Somehow the unpopular Mike manages to get out of the sight of the teacher and enter the 'Scare Floor'and even get into one of the frightened children's rooms. From that moment he knows for sure, he wants to become the biggest 'Scarer' of Monstropolis.

After a jump in time we see Mike's arrival at Monsters University, where he meets his roommate Randy, who will eventually grow into Sulley's biggest rival. From the start it is clear that Mike will never be a big scarer and doesn't belong in the 'Scare Program' of Monsters University. This is where we meet the character James P. Sullivan, a popular layabout with a natural talent for scaring. The nerdy Mike Wazowski and the indifferent Sulley are far different from the couple they would become in Monsters Inc. they can not get along with each other at all, however after a plot twist they have to.

Although Monsters University in itself is a fine animation movie, I must say that it is far from attaining the level of its predecessor. Monsters University takes back earlier jokes, standard college scenes and seem to have watched Harry Potter movies on how to use games as team building in movies. Unfortunately, my fear is confirmed and Monsters University is not the great movie i wanted it to be. Nevertheless, it is good entertainment.

The Internship (2013)

Vince Vaughn en Owen Wilson hebben in het verleden al eens eerder laten zien dat ze een succesvol comedy duo kunnen zijn. Hun film Wedding Crashers was boven verwachting eigenlijk een prima komedie film. Acht jaar na Wedding Crashers is het duo terug met The Internship. Vince Vaughn was zelf voor een deel verantwoordelijk voor het schrijven van het script.

Billy McMahon (Vince Vaughn) en Nick Campbell (Owen Wilson) zijn weinig succesvolle horloge verkopers. Niet dat het enorm aan hun kwaliteiten ligt, maar de business waren ze zich begeven gaat failliet. Hun zaak is ingehaald door de techniek. Iedereen koopt hun producten via internet. De twee veertigers beseffen zich maar al te goed dat ze weinig kans hebben op een fatsoenlijke baan en al helemaal zonder diploma.
Billy besluit verder te kijken dan zijn neus lang is en meldt hun beiden aan als stagiaires bij Google. Na een hilarische sollicitatie via video chat wordt het duo zowaar uitgenodigd bij Google. Eenmaal daar aan gekomen blijkt dat ze mee moeten doen aan een week vol training en vervolgens een loodzware teamchallange om ook daadwerkelijk te kunnen starten met hun stage bij Google. Een plek die alleen is weggelegd voor de allerbesten. Billy en Nick komen terecht in een groepje met alle buitenbeentjes. Al snel blijkt dat de twee, zonder enig verstand van computers, weinig te zoeken hebben in de wereld van Google. Toch blijkt dat het verkopersduo met hun levenservaring en creativiteit zeker een toegevoegde waarde zijn voor het team.

The Internship is eigenlijk weinig verrassend, heeft weinig inhoud en heeft eigenlijk een flinterdun script. Het verhaal zit vol met clichés. Toch moet ik zeggen dat ondanks al deze kritiek de film toch eigenlijk best heel grappig is. Vince Vaughn en Owen Wilson hebben het toch weer geflikt om mijn hart te veroveren. Het duo heeft eigenlijk de hele film gered. De chemie tussen die twee klopt gewoon. Helaas was de film gewoon slecht. Op naar de nieuwe film van het duo, nieuwe ronde, nieuwe kansen.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have already shown in the past that they can be a very Successful comedy duo. Their movie Wedding Crashers was above expectations actually a good comedy movie. Eight years after Wedding Crashers the two are back with The Internship. Vince Vaughn himself was part responsible for the writing of the script.

Billy McMahon (Vince Vaughn) and Nick Campbell (Owen Wilson) sell expensive watches, but aren't very successful. Not that they aren't good at their jobs, but their business has folded. Their business has been overrun by the technology. Everyone buys their products on the internet. The two middle-aged men realize only too well that they have little chance getting a decent job without
having any diplomas.

Billy decides to look beyond all of this and fills in an applicationform for the both of them to start as an intern at Google. After a hilarious video chat job interview, the duo actually gets invited by Google. Once there they not only need to do a week of training but also be part a tough team challange to actually be able to start their internship at Google. Only the best team will earn a place at Google. Billy and Nick end up in a group with all the misfits. It soon becomes apparent that the two, that haven't got any understanding of computers, have very little to offer in the world of Google. Yet it appears that the two salesman actually have something to offer with their life experience and creativity and certainly are an added value to the team.

Unfortunately The Internship isn't nearly as good as Wedding Crashers. The movie is predictable, lacks depth and has a very flat script. The story is full of clichés. However with all these flaws the movie still is pretty funny and watchable. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson again have managed to win my heart. The two have actually saved this movie from getting much and much worse. Somehow the chemistry between the two just seems right. Unfortunately for the two the movie is just a poor effort. Hopefully next time they have more luck.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Julia Stiles, Chris Tucker

Ik moet zeggen dat deze film pas in mijn blikveld kwam nadat de film genomineerd was voor 8 oscars. Silver Linings Playbook wist hier slechts één van te verzilveren. Mijn interesse was hier in ieder geval mee gewekt.

Pat (Bradley Cooper) heeft een niet gediagnostiseerde bipolaire stoornis en is acht maanden gedwongen opgenomen in een Psychiatrische kliniek vanwege een geweldsmisdrijf tegen de minnaar van zijn vrouw. Hij komt op afraden van de therapeut vervroegd vrij. Onder de voorwaarde dat hij bij zijn ouders woont, zich houdt aan het straatverbod wat hem is opgelegd en wekelijks zijn therapeut ziet. Pat is er van overtuigd dat hij het hart van zijn vrouw Nikki terug kan winnen. Hij doet dit onder andere door hard te lopen om weer in conditie te komen, alle boeken te lezen die op de boekenlijst staan van de school waar Nikki doceerde.
Wanneer Pat tijdens een diner bij vrienden, de minstens zo gestoorde, Tiffany ontmoet wordt zijn hele leven weer op de kop gezet. Tiffany besluit Pat te helpen contact te leggen met Nikki. Op voorwaarde dat Pat samen met Tiffany meedoet aan een locale danswedstrijd.
Al snel blijkt voor de kijker dat Tiffany een veel geschiktere partner is voor Pat, hij heeft dit zelf echter niet door.

David O. Russell heeft met Silver Linings Playbook een prima film uitgebracht. Ondanks het serieuze thema van de film heeft de regisseur perfecte balans kunnen vinden tussen Drama en Comedy. Het is niet makkelijk om een onderwerp als een bipolaire stoornis, het luchtig te brengen zonder af te doen aan de serieusheid ervan. De oscar voor de rol van Jennifer Lawrence als Tiffany is meer dan terecht. Haar alleen credit geven voor de acteerprestaties in de film is afdoen aan de rest van de cast. Zowel Bradley Cooper als Robert De Niro en Jacki Weaver waren terecht genomineerd voor hun prestaties. Wat mij betreft mogen er meer van deze drama's en komedies uit Hollywood komen.

I must say that the first time i heard about this movie was only after it was nominated for eight Oscars! Silver Linings Playbook was able to win only 1 out of 8. Anyway it got my attention that's for sure.

Pat (Bradley Cooper) has an undiagnosed bipolar disorder He was sentenced to go to a psychiatric clinic for eight month after committing a violent crime against his wife's lover. Against medical advise Pat is being discharged under a few conditions, that he lives with his parents, he keeps his restraining order and will visit his therapist on weekly basis.
Pat is convinced that he can win his wife's heart back. He runs every day to get in shape. He reads all the books that his wife Nikki made the kids read at the school where she taught. He does everything to show he's a changed man.
When Pat meets, the equally disturbed, Tiffany at a dinner with friends, it puts his life upside down again. She wants to help him get in contact with Nikki again. However in exchange for that she wants him to join a dance contest with her. It soon becomes apparent to the viewer that Tiffany is a far much suitable partner for Pat, however he doesn't notice because he is so obsessed with Nikki.

David O. Russell has released a pretty good movie with Silver Linings Playbook. Despite the serious theme of the film, the director has found the perfect balance between Drama and Comedy. It's not easy to create a light film about a serious topic like bipolar disorder.
The Oscar for the Tiffany character played by Jennifer Lawrence is more than justified. However by only giving her the credit for her performance in the film would not be right. Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver were all rightly nominated for their performances as well. I am glad to see Drama/Comedies like this still are being made in Hollywood.

The Heat (2013)

Enigszins sceptisch was ik bij voorbaat al over deze film. Sandra Bullock als FBI agente in een actie/comedy. Voor mijn gevoel hadden we dit toch al gehad met Miss Congeniality 1 en 2. Gelukkig was dit gevoel bij de eerste minuten van de film direct verdwenen. The Heat is een totaal andere film.

Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) heeft een reputatie als betweter bij de FBI. Ze werkt precies volgens de regels en maakt zich hiermee niet erg geliefd. Op het moment dat er een hooggeplaatste functie vrijkomt is het voor haar niet meer dan logisch dat zij in aanmerking komt voor de functie. Haar baas besluit haar echter naar Boston te sturen om een zaak op te lossen. Pas daarna zal ze in aanmerking komen voor deze functie.

In Boston moet Ashburn samenwerken met Detective Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), een grove vrouw met een opvliegend karakter die nogal eens over de schreef gaat in haar politiewerk. Toch doet ze haar werk met liefde en dit is waarin de beiden elkaar weten te vinden. De twee zijn zulke uitersten van elkaar dat dit hilarische taferelen oplevert. Ashburn leert al snel dat je met alleen je aan de regels houden je nog geen zware crimineel pakt. Je hebt flink wat lef nodig en moet af en toe wat risico nemen.

Paul Feig heeft na zijn film Bridesmaides wederom een prima komedie afgeleverd. Het Duo McCarthy en Bullock is perfect voor deze film. Het is alsof ze al jaren samen acteren. Een soort van vrouwelijke variant van Simon Pegg en Nick Frost. The Heat is de perfecte combinatie van een actie en comedy en zal hiermee dan zowel mannelijk als vrouwelijk publiek aanspreken.

At first I was somewhat skeptical about this movie. Sandra Bullock as FBI agent in an action-comedy. Haven't we already seen all this with Miss Congeniality 1 and 2. Fortunately this feeling disappeared within the first few minutes of the film. The Heat is a total different movie.

Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) has a reputation as smart ass at the FBI. She works exactly according to the rules which doesn't make her very popular at the bureau. When a senior function opens up it only seems logical for Ashburn that she should get the job. However, her boss decides to send her off to Boston to solve a case. After that the job is hers.

On arrival in Boston Ashburn must work with Detective Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), a coarse woman with a bad temper who often goes far beyond her jurisdiction. Yet she does her job with love and this is where both find each other. The two are such extremes in characters which causes most of the hilarity in the movie. Ashburn soon learns that you won't catch a criminal by sticking to the rules. You need a lot of guts and take a risk every now and then.

After Bridesmaides Paul Feig once again has delivered a fine comedy. The Duo McCarthy and Bullock is perfect for this film. It's like they have been acting together for years. A sort of female version of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The Heat is the perfect combination of action and comedy, and then this will appeal to both male and female audience.

Jagten (2012)

Thomas Vinterberg is inmiddels geen onbekende meer. Hij maakte het prachtige familie drama Festen uit 1998, waarmee hij een onder andere een gouden palm wist te winnen. Festen was gefilmd volgens het Dogme 95 principe. Een verbond van regisseurs waar ook Lars van Trier bij hoorde. Ook Submarino uit 2010 was een puike film. De film Jagten had ik dan al enige tijd in het vizier.

Na wat tegenslagen lijkt Lucas het leven weer op te pakken. Lucas heeft een hechte vriendengroep met wie hij regelmatig gaat drinken. Hij heeft een nieuwe baan gevonden bij de plaatselijke kleuterschool, waar hij ook zijn nieuwe vriendin ontmoet. Daarnaast komt ook zijn zoon die een aantal jaar bij zijn ex woonde weer bij hem wonen.
Zijn leven veranderd echter in een nachtmerrie wanneer de dochter van zijn beste vriend hem ten onrechte beschuldigd van misbruik.
Het nieuws verspreid zich als een lopend vuurtje. De hechte gemeenschap lijkt zich volledig tegen hem te keren. Alleen zijn broer en zoon lijken hem nog te geloven. Lucas laat zich niet uit het veld slaan en besluit de dorpelingen niet uit de weg te gaan.

Jagten laat een prachtig verhaal zien over iemand die uitgekotst wordt door de maatschappij en vervolgens hoe moeilijk ook weer de draad probeert op te pakken. De film werkt met thema's als vriendschap, vergeving, vertrouwen, vooroordelen en maatschappelijke issues. De rol van Lucas is zeer geloofwaardig gespeeld door Mads Mikkelsen. Maar ook het acteerwerk van Thomas Bo Larsen is fantastisch! Thomas Vinterberg heeft met Jagten weer een Arthouse klassieker op zijn naam geschreven.

Thomas Vinterberg is no stranger to any arthouse fan. He made the beautiful family drama Festen 1998, for which he won a Golden Palm. Festen was filmed according to the Dogme 95 principle, An alliance of directors which also included Lars van Trier. The movie Submarino from 2010 was also a very fine film. So when Jagten was released i knew i wanted to watch this movie.

After some setbacks Lucas seems to pick up his life again. Lucas has a close group of friends with whom he drinks regularly. He has found a new job at the local kindergarten, where he meets his new girlfriend. Also, his son who lived with is ex for some time is moving back to live with him.
His life changes dramatically when the daughter of his best friend falsely accused him of abuse. The news spreads like wildfire. The close-knit community seems to completely turn against him. Only his brother and son believe in his innocence. As hard as it is Lucas is not running away from the community he lives in.

Jagten is a beautiful story about someone who is turned down by society. The film has themes such as friendship, forgiveness, trust, prejudice and social issues. The role of Lucas is very credible played by Mads Mikkelsen. Also the acting of Thomas Bo Larsen is fantastic! Thomas Vinterberg brought us another arthouse classic with Jagten.

Amour (2012)

Een van de filmfestivals die ik altijd met veel aandacht volg is het Festival in Cannes. Regisseur Michael Haneke is daar eigenlijk altijd wel een graag geziene gast. Veel van zijn films vielen de afgelopen jaren in de prijzen. Zo won Das Weisse Band in 2009 nog de Palm d'Or voor beste film. In 2012 deed Haneke het nog even dunnetjes over met Amour.

Georges en Anne leiden een rustig leven als gepensioneerde muziekleraren. Ze wonen samen in een mooi appartement in het prachtige parijs. Muziek speelt nog altijd een belangrijke rol in hun leven. Ze gaan regelmatig naar concerten en zo.
Hun leven veranderd drastisch wanneer Anne een beroerte krijgt, waarbij haar rechterhelft verlamt raakt. Op Anne's verzoek besluiten ze dat wanneer Anne achteruit gaat ze niet opgenomen word in een verzorgingshuis of ziekenhuis.
Wanneer Anne een tweede beroerte krijgt gaat ze snel achteruit. De zorg wordt zwaarder en zwaarder, toch wordt de liefde tussen het stel er niet minder op.

Amour is een bijzonder aangrijpende film. Het is niet zo zeer een verhaal over een stel dat ouder wordt. Maar meer een verhaal over wat een ingrijpende gebeurtenis met een mens doet. De complete film is opgenomen in het appartement van de twee, toch leveren de camerastandpunten en de belichting prachtige shots op. Ook het acteerwerk van de twee hoofdpersonen is van grote klasse. Met Amour laat regisseur Michael Haneke wederom zien een groot filmmaker te zijn.

One of the festivals that I always follow with great attention the film festival in Cannes. Director Michael Haneke is always a welcome guest. A lot of his films were nominated and won awards in Cannes over the years. Das Weisse Band won the prestigious price the Palm d'Or for best film in 2009. In 2012 director Haneke won the Palm d'Or again. This time with his latest movie Amour.

Georges and Anne lead a quiet life as a retired music teachers. They live together in a nice apartment in beautiful city Paris. Music still plays an important role in their lives. They regularly go to concerts.
Their lives change dramatically when Anne suffers a stroke, her right side gets paralyzed. At Anne's request, they decide not to take Anne to a nursing home or hospital if she deteriorates.
When Anne gets a second stroke she is rapidly deteriorating. The care for Anne gets heavier every day, yet the love between the couple is still very much alive.

Amour is a very moving film. It is not a story about a couple getting older. But it's a story about what a major event, like a stroke, does with a human being. The entire film was shot in the apartment of the elder couple, yet it did not affect the beauty of the camera angles and lighting of the shots. Also the acting of the two main characters is of great class. With Amour director Michael Haneke again shows to be a great filmmaker.

The Impossible (2012)

Op tweede kerstdag 2004 werd Zuidoost Azië getroffen door een verschrikkelijke allesverwoestende tsunami. Het is een van de grootste natuurrampen uit de recente geschiedenis. Deze film verteld het verhaal van een gezin die deze ramp van zelf meemaakte.

Maria en Henry hebben besloten om met hun drie zoons de kerstvakantie te vieren in Thailand. De dag voor kerst komen ze aan in een prachtig resort aan de kust van Thailand. Daar aangekomen blijkt dat hun verblijf bezet is en krijgen ze zelfs een vakantiehuis aan zee. Wat zo prachtig had moeten zijn loopt uit in een nachtmerrie.
Terwijl het gezin aan het spelen is aan de rand van het zwembad, worden ze overrompeld door een huizenhoge vernietigende golf. Maria en haar oudste zoon Lucas worden hierbij op brute wijze gescheiden van Henry en de twee jongste zoons. Wat volgt is een verhaal van overleven, maar meer dan ook een zoektocht naar de hereniging van de familie.

De film is zeer realistisch neergezet. Het is een heftig beeld om Maria en Lucas in het water te zien overleven. Ze worden meegesleurd door de kracht van het water. Tegelijk zie je ook hoe Maria al haar verwondingen oploopt door al het puin in het water. De beelden gaan door merg en been.
De acteerprestaties van Naomi Watts en Ewan McGregor zijn formidabel. Het voelt alsof je het verhaal met hun meebeleefd.
Ik kan niet anders concluderen dan dat Juan Antonio Bayona met zijn eerste Engelstalige film een prima film heeft afgeleverd.

On arrival it appears that their apartment is double booked, so they are offered a seaside appartment. But what should have been a dream trip would soon turn out to become a nightmare.
While the family is playing on the edge of the pool, they are overwhelmed by a towering destructive wave. Mary and her eldest son Lucas get separated from Henry and the two youngest sons. What follows is a story of survival, but even more
a search for reunification of their family.

The movie has been filmed very realistic. It is a violent image to see Maria and Lucas survive in the water. They are taken down and carried away by the force of the water. At the same time you can see how Mary gets all her wounds by the debris in the water. The images sets your teeth on edge.
The performances of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are formidable. It feels like you almost live their story.
Director Juan Antonio Bayona (Director of El Orfanata) has delivered an excellent movie with his first English-language film.

Er zijn weinig verhalen zo bekend als het verhaal van Les Miserables. Het boek geschreven door Victor Hugo werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1862. Het is een van de beste boeken van de 19e eeuw. Inmiddels zijn er al een aantal films van gemaakt en als musical werd het ook een groot succes. De meest boeiende vraag is dan ook wat de toegevoegde waarde is van deze door Tom Hooper (o.a. The King’s Speech)geregisseerde film.

Het verhaal van Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) begint in een strafkamp in het 19e eeuws Frankrijk. We zien een groep mannen die onder toeziend oog van officier Javert (Russell Crowe) een schip op de kant trekt. Nadat Valjean voorwaardelijk wordt vrijgelaten neemt hij de benen om nooit meer terug te komen. Hij neemt een andere naam aan en weet zelfs uiteindelijk op te klimmen tot fabriekseigenaar en uiteindelijk tot burgemeester van Montreuil-sur-Mer.
Zijn leven neemt wederom een ommezwaai wanneer hij zich bekommert om Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) de dochter van Fantine (Anne Hatthaway).
Wanneer blijkt dat er iemand onterecht is opgepakt omdat hij Jean Valjean zou zijn, besluit hij zijn ware identiteit te laten zien om, zodat deze man vrij kan komen. Jean Valjean moet hierdoor echter wel op de vlucht slaan.
Een paar jaar later vervolgen we het verhaal en komen we terecht midden in de Franse Revolutie.

"Fight. Dream. Hope. Love." prijkt op de film poster. Een mooiere samenvatting van dit prachtige verhaal kan ik niet geven. We zien prachtige decors van het 19e eeuwse Frankrijk. Tom Hooper heeft wel een risico genomen door vrijwel de volledige film gezongen op te nemen. Bijna elke dialoog is gezongen. Hierdoor is de film niet voor iedereen even behapbaar. De zang kwaliteiten van Hugh Jackman en Anne Hathaway prachtig zijn. Russell Crowe lijkt het af en toe wat moeilijk te hebben met alleen maar zang. Toch doet dit niet af aan de film. Les Miserables is en blijft een prachtig verhaal.

There are few stories as well known as the story of Les Miserables. The book written by Victor Hugo was first published in 1862. It is one of the best books of the 19th century. Meanwhile, there are already a number of films made ​​and it was one of the biggest and best musicals ever made. The most interesting question is what is the added value of this movie which is directed by Tom Hooper (including The King's Speech).

The story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) begins in a Prison camp in the 19th century France. We see a group of men that ,under the watchful eye of officer Javert (Russell Crowe) pulls a ship on the banks. After Valjean is released on parole, he takes off never to return. He adopts a new name and eventually climbs up to become a factory owner and eventually Mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
His life takes another turn when he decides to take care for Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) the daughter of Fantine (Anne Hatthaway).
When at one day it appears that someone has been called Jean Valjean is arrested, he decided to show his true identity. This however means he needs to flee again for Javert.
We jump a bit in time until we end up in the French revolution.


"Fight. Dream. Hope. Love." is displayed on the movie poster. I can't think of a better summary for this wonderful story. We see beautiful sceneries of 19th century France. It's a well adapted screenplay. Tom Hooper however has taken a risk by singing almost every dialogue in the movie. Because of that it isn't a very accessible movie. The vocal qualities of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are beautiful. Only Russell Crowe seems to have a bit trouble with the singing in some scenes. Luckily this does not affect the quality of this movie. Les Miserables still is a wonderful story.

To Rome With Love (2012)

Woody Allen is one of those inconic directors that everyone has heard of. He is known for his movies 'Annie Hall' and 'Manhatten', which are both of the late 70's. However he has released some pretty good movies in the last decade as well. Films as "Matchpoint", Vicky Christina Barcelona and Midnight In Paris, which are all about European cities. After London, Barcelona and Paris it is time for a movie about Rome.

Like in every Woody Allen movie he has hired an amazing Cast with actors like Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin. However we have seen it before that a stellar cast isn't a guarantee for a good movie.
In To Rome With Love we follow four storylines. First we have the story of Hayley an American tourist who falls in love with an Italian. Hayley's parents come to visit her fiancé and his parents. They don't seem to get along very well which leads to several funny moments.
Then we have Antonio and Milly's storyline. They just got married and moved to Rome, because Antonio got a job in the company of his rich uncles. Somehow Milly gets lost in Rome and Anna gets introduced to Antonio's rich uncles as Milly. This leads to some really awkward situations.
The most bizarre story of the four is Leopoldo's story. Leopoldo has a desk job in an office. inexplicable, he wakes up the next day to discover he has become a national celebrity. We follow his weird life from studio's to film premieres, etc, etc.
Last one is the story of Jack, an American Architecture student. He lives together with his girlfriend Sally. When Sally's friend Monica comes over to stay with them in Rome for a while, Jack seems more interested in Monica than Sally.

From all the movies about European cities that Woody Allen has made this probably is the weakest of them all. Not because of the acting, which was actually pretty good, but the writing. It feels like 4 stories wrapped together and it does not do credit to the beautiful story of Rome. This city deserved better. Hopefully the next Woody Allen is as good as Midnight In Paris or Vicky Christina Barcelona.

Quartet (2012)

Als liefhebber van de Britse cinema was ik verrast om te zien dat de grote Amerikaanse acteur Dustin Hoffman met deze typisch Britse film zijn regie debuut aflevert. Dustin Hoffman heeft niet de minste namen weten te strikken voor zijn film. Grote acteurs als Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay en Michael Gambon werken mee, maar ook de screenwriter Ronald Harwood (The Pianist, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly en Australia) verbond zijn naam aan deze film.

Beecham House is een bejaardentehuis voor gepensioneerde muzikanten. Veel van hen hebben naam gemaakt in succesvolle opera's en wereldberoemde orkesten. Elk jaar wordt er ter ere van de verjaardag van Verdi een benefietconcert gehouden voor hun eigen . De bewoners van Beecham House komen bij elkaar om samen dit concert voor te bereiden.

Wanneer Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) komt wonen is er een hoop commotie. Het grote kwartet van de Britse opera is na jaren weer compleet. Wat zou het fantastisch zijn als dit kwartet zou zingen tijdens het benefietconcert voor het met sluiting bedreigde Beecham House. Het zou het nodige bedrag zeker binnenhalen om sluiting te voorkomen. Toch blijkt het nog niet zo makkelijk om de vier bij elkaar te brengen.

Met Quartet heeft Dustin Hoffman een prima debuut weten af te leveren. Hoewel de film voornamelijk gedragen wordt door het prima acteerwerk. Het verhaal is ietwat voorspelbaar, maar dat maakt de film niet minder. In de aftiteling wordt zelfs duidelijk dat veel bijrollen in deze film werden vertolkt door oud-muzikanten. Quartet is een heerlijk Brits feelgooddrama vol met prachtige muziek en prachtige mensen.

Beecham House is a home for retired musicians and opera singers. Many of them have made ​​a name in world famous operas and orchestras. Every year there is a benefit concert in honor of the birthday of Verdi. The proceeds of this concert go to Beecham House. The film begins with residents jointly preparing this Concert.

With Quartet Dustin Hoffman has an managed to deliver an excellent debut. Although the film is primarily carried by the fine acting, especially Maggie Smith and Tom Courtenay. The story is somewhat predictable, but it does not affect the quality of the film. In the credits it even becomes clear that many supporting roles in this film were played by former musicians. Quartet is a wonderful British feelgood drama full of beautiful music and beautiful people.

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Ik ben nooit zo'n groot fan geweest van grote blockbusters. Voornamelijk omdat van elk succes wel een sequel en of spin-off word gemaakt. Dit komt over het algemeen de kwaliteit niet ten goede. Gelukkig zijn er zo nu en dan ook succesvolle sequels te vinden, zoals de Batmanfilms van Christopher Nolan. Iron Man was een prima film, een goede actiefilm, niks mis mee en was dan ook terecht een succes. Het tweede deel liet echter te wensen over. Iron Man 2 haalde bij lange na niet het niveau wat het zou moeten hebben. De film was op z'n best middelmatig. Ik ging dan ook met enige terughoudendheid naar deel drie.
Wat eigenlijk meteen opvalt is dat de film veel meer ingaat op het karakter van Tony Stark. Wie is de man achter het metalen pak. We zien niet alleen een arogante Stark, maar ook een kwetsbare man. Deze insteek zorgt voor de nodige diepgang die deel 3 zeker nodig had.
Ook in dit deel weet Stark zichzelf aardig in de nesten te werken. The Mandarin, een op Osama Bin Laden lijkende terrorist, heeft de laatste maanden flink wat aanslagen op zijn geweten heeft in de VS. Zijn laatste aanslag weet de persoonlijk bodyguard van Stark en Potts ternauwernood te overleven. Stark, emotioneel als hij is, verklaard hierop de oorlog met The Mandarin. Deze kiest vol voor de aanval, waardoor Stark zijn hele hebben en houden verliest. Hij weet nog net met zijn nieuwe test-suit te ontsnappen. Bij deze ontsnapping raakt zijn Iron Man pak dermate beschadigd dat hij geen andere mogelijkheid heeft dan als Stark op zoek te gaan naar het mysterie achter de aanslagen. We zien een Stark zoals we hem nog nooit hebben gezien, Creatief, kwetsbaar, maar nog altijd gedreven om zijn vijand te vinden.
Iron Man 3 is een boeiend vervolg in de serie. De film is een goede combinatie van actie en komedie. Regisseur Shane Black heeft de ontsporende trein van Iron Man weer op de rails weten te krijgen. Een puike film. Op naar de volgende Marvel film. Ik heb er in ieder geval weer zin in.

I've never been a big fan of blockbusters. Mainly because of every success a sequel or spin-off is created. Generally it does not benefit the quality. Fortunately there are also successful sequels to be found, like Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.
The First Iron Man film was a great movie. Some good action, some humor. The movie got the success that it deserved. The second part, however, left much to be desired. Iron Man 2 got nowhere near the level that it should have. The movie was mediocre at its best. Therefore i went with some reluctance to the cinema to see part three.

What stands out immediately is that the film is much more about the character of Tony Stark. The man behind the metal suit. We not only see an arogante Stark, but also a vulnerable man. This approach provides the necessary depth Part 3 definitely needed.

Also in this third movie Stark gets himself into trouble. The Mandarin, an Osama Bin Laden-like Chinese terrorist, has been responsible for some terrorist attacks on US citizens in recent months. With his last attack the personal bodyguard of Stark and Potts is one of the victims. He barely survived the attack. Stark, emotionally as he is, declared war with The Mandarin. The Terrorist strikes back immediately by bombing the Stark's property. Stark barely escaped his house in his new test suit. In this escape the test-suit get's heavily damaged. Stark decides to find out about the mysterious attacks. One problem however, he doesn't have the Iron Man suit to wear. We see a Stark we have never seen before, Creative, vulnerable, but still driven to find his enemy.
Iron Man 3 is an exciting sequel in the series. The film is a good combination of action and comedy. Director Shane Black has managed to get the derailed train of Iron Man back on the tracks. I'm looking forward to the next Marvel movie already.

Ik denk dat het in het najaar van 2011 was dat ik voor het eerst het debuut van Charles Bradley hoorde. Ik las een lovende recensie in een muziekblad. Meteen bij het horen van het eerste nummer was ik verkocht. De plaat was een van mijn favorieten van 2011 en stond in de top 50 beste platen van 2011 volgens Rolling Stone Magazine.

De documentaire Charles Bradley - Soul Of America volgt Charles Bradley in de aanloop naar zijn debuut album. Charles Bradley heeft een bewogen leven achter de rug. Hij groeide op bij zijn oma in florida, totdat zijn moeder hem en de rest van de kinderen plotseling meenam naar New York. Hij had zijn moeder in geen 8 jaar gezien en kende haar daardoor niet.
Als jonge tiener liep Charles weg. Hij leefde twee jaar op straat. Hij sliep dan in metro's en metrostations. Hij leidde dit leven totdat hij zich aanmeldde bij het educatie project Job Corps, waar hij een opleiding kreeg als kok. In deze periode werd hij een James Brown imitator en ontdekte hij zijn liefde voor het podium.

Jarenlang ging Charles Bradley als Black Velvet, de James Brown imitator, door het leven. Hij trad op in clubs en kroegen, totdat hij in contact kwam met de jongens van Daptone Records. Documentaire maker Poull Brien pakt de draad op tijdens de 62e verjaardag dan de debuterende zanger.

Charles Bradley - Soul Of America is een prachtige eerlijke documentaire. Het is een film die niet alleen de muziek belicht, maar meer dan ook de mens achter de muziek. Het is een verhaal vol dankbaarheid, liefde, leven, maar vooral ook vol fantastische muziek.

I think it was in the autumn of 2011 that I first heard the debut album of Charles Bradley. I read a positive review in a music magazine. Immediately upon hearing the first song I was hooked. The album was one of my favorites of 2011 and was in the top 50 best albums of 2011 by Rolling Stone Magazine.

The documentary 'Charles Bradley - Soul Of America' follows Charles Bradley leading up to the release of his debut album. Charles Bradley did not have an easy life. He was raised by his grandmother in Florida, until his mother took him and the rest of the children suddenly back to New York. He had not seen his mother for 8 years and because of that he did not know his mother until then.
As a young teenager Charles ran away. He lived two years on the streets. He then slept in subways and metro stations. He led this life until he enlisted in the education project of Job Corps, where he received and education as a cook. During this period he became a James Brown impersonator and discovered his love for being on the stage.

For years Charles Bradley was Black Velvet, the James Brown impersonator. He performed in clubs and pubs, until he came in contact with the guys from Daptone Records. Documentary maker Poull Brien picks up the story at the 62nd birthday of the debuting singer.

'Charles Bradley - Soul Of America' is a wonderful honest documentary. It is a film that not only shows the music, but even more the man behind the music. It is a story full of gratitude, love, life, but also full of great music.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Een Wes Anderson film herken je uit duizenden. Zijn stijl en thematiek is onmiskenbaar. Zijn films gaan vrijwel altijd over een disfunctionerend gezin (Royal Tenenbaums, Darjeeling Limited). De films zijn altijd een tikje bizar, wat absurdistisch en melodramatisch. Daarnaast werkt Wes Anderson veelal met een vaste groep acteurs. Moonrise Kingdom is hierin geen uitzondering.

Moonrise Kingdom speelt zich af op het kleine eiland voor de kust van New England. Naast de paar gezinnen die er wonen is er een eilandpolitie en is er een scoutingkamp gaande. Op een dag besluiten de tieners Suzy en Sam samen weg te lopen. Sam ontvlucht het scoutingkamp en Suzy loopt van huis weg. Terwijl de twee ontdekken wat ze nu eigenlijk voor elkaar voelen is het hele eiland op zoek naar de twee tieners.

Wes Anderson heeft wederom een prachtige comedy vol met dramatische elementen afgeleverd. Prima acteerwerk, en heerlijke droge dialogen die zorgen voor een flinke dosis humor. Ondanks alle vaste elementen die wederom in de film terug te vinden zijn, is de film absoluut niet saai. Sterker nog het zou nog wel eens zijn beste film tot nu toe kunnen zijn.

You can always recognize a Wes Anderson movie. His style and theme are very distinct. His films are mostly about a dysfunctional family (Royal Tenenbaums, Darjeeling Limited). The movies are always a bit weird, somewhat absurd and melodramatic. In addition, Wes Anderson usually workes with actors he has already worked with before. Moonrise Kingdom is no exception in all this.

Moonrise Kingdom is set on a small island off the coast of New England. Besides the few families who live on the island there is an island-police and a scouting camp. One day the teens Suzy and Sam decide to run away together. Sam fled the scouting camp and Suzy runs away from home. While the two discover what they really feel for each other is the island in full search for the two teens.

Again Wes Anderson has delivered a wonderful comedy full with dramatic elements. Great acting, and brilliant funny dialogues provide a good dose of humor. Despite all fixed elements which can be found in the film, it is definitely not boring. Indeed it could well be his best film so far can be.

Intouchables (2011)

Jaarlijks worden er prima Franse films uitgebracht. Zo nu en dan zitten er wat uitschieters bij. Zo hadden we de laatste jaren bijvoorbeeld Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis, il y a longtemps que je t'aime en Un Prophete. In Frankrijk werd het zelf een van de meest bekeken films allertijden. De film moest slecht twee anderen voor zich dulden.

Intouchables verteld het verhaal van de miljonair Philippe, die door een ongeluk ernstig gehandicapt is geworden en Driss een van oorsprong Senegalese jongen die leeft van een uitkering en niet van plan is om zijn werkeloze leven in te ruilen voor een leven waarin hij zelf de kost verdiend.
Als je een uitkering wil krijgen, zal je ook moeten solliciteren. Zo komt Driss terecht bij een sollicitatie gesprek als verzorgende van Philippe. Tot grote verbazing van velen wordt Driss aangenomen en heeft hij een echte baan. Dit zet niet alleen het leven van Driss op de kop, maar minstens zo veel ook het leven van Philippe. Er ontstaat een bijzondere band tussen de twee.

Intouchables is een bijzonder autobiografische verfilming. De film weet je te raken met de eenvoud, humor maar minstens ook het drama. Het is uitstekend acteerwerk van de beide hoofdrolspelers en terecht dan ook dat dit de Franse inzending is voor de Oscars. Het zou ook meer dan terecht zijn als de film de oscar voor beste buitenlandse film zou winnen.

Annually many fine French films are being released. Every now and then there are some
exceptional French movies. For example the last few years we had Bienvenue Chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the Sticks), il ya longtemps que je t'aime (I've Loved You So Long) and Un Prophete (A Prophet). In France it was one of the most watched films of all time.

Intouchables tells the story of the millionaire Philippe, who by accident has become severely disabled, and Driss, originally a Senegalese boy, who lives on unemployment benefits and does not intend to change his life into one where he has a job.
If you want to get an unemployment benefit, you will also need to apply for jobs. That's why one time he shows up at a job interview as a nurse for Philppe. To the surprise of many, Driss gets the job. This is not only a lifetime change for Driss, but also for Philippe. A special bond arises between the two.

Intouchables is a highly recommendable autobiographical film. The movie knows to hit you with simplicity, humor but also a lot of the drama. It's excellent acting of the two protagonists and rightly therefore that this is the French entry for the Oscars.
It would be more than justice if the film receives the Oscar for best foreign movie.

Blue Like Jazz is de verfilming van de gelijknamige autobiografische bestseller van Donald Miller. Regisseur Steve Taylor ,die in de jaren 80 en 90 als muzikant aardig succesvolle platen wist te maken, wilde al een aantal jaar het boek verfilmen. Helaas kwam door gebrek aan investeerders het project niet van de grond. Toen Steve Taylor uiteindelijk de stekker eruit wilde trekken, startten twee fans de kickstarter-campagne 'Save Blue Like Jazz'. Het resultaat moge duidelijk zijn. De film kwam er!

Blue Like Jazz vertelt het verhaal van de jonge Don Miller. Hij komt uit een conservatief christelijke Texaans gezin. Zijn hele leven speelt zich af in kerkelijke kringen totdat hij geconfronteerd wordt met hypocrisie in de kerk. Hij heeft net highschool afgerond en besluit het aanbod van zijn vader aan te nemen om te gaan studeren aan het progressieve, liberale maar ook losbandige Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
Het studentenleven lijkt eerst wat onwennig, maar al snel weet hij zijn draai te vinden in het roerige excentrieke studentenleven op Reed College. Door deze nieuwe levensstijl wordt Don ook gedwongen om zijn te ontdekken wie hij is en wat hij nog geloofd.

Don: "What if God is trying to compose something? What if all these stars are notes on a page of music...swirling in the blue like jazz?"

Steve Taylor laat zien dat christenen wel degelijk goede films kunnen maken. De film zet tot nadenken. De film is geen cliché verhaal met een flinterdun script. Het verhaal is goed opgebouwd in mooie duidelijke hoofdstukken. Het acteerwerk en de regie zijn prima. Aan het eind van de film wilde ik de dvd eigenlijk opnieuw aanzetten.

Blue Like Jazz is an adaptation of the eponymous autobiographical bestseller by Donald Miller. Director Steve Taylor, who in the 80s and 90s was quite succesful as a musician, wanted to film this book for quite some time. Unfortunately, due to lack of investors the project never got off the ground. When Steve Taylor finally wanted to pull the plug, two fans started a kickstarter campaign called 'Save Blue Like Jazz '. The Kickstarter campaign saved the project and Blue Like Jazz got released.

Blue Like Jazz tells the story of the young Don Miller. He comes from a conservative christian Texan family. His life takes place in a save Christian environment until he is confronted with hypocrisy in the church. He has just completed high school and decides to take his fathers offer to go and study at the progressive, liberal and dissolute Reed College in Portland, Oregon.

At life as a student seems a little awkward, but soon he manages to find his place in the turbulent eccentric student life at Reed College. Because of this new lifestyle Don is also forced to discover who he is and what his beliefs are.

Don: 'What if God is trying to compose something? What if all these stars are notes on a page of music...swirling in the blue like jazz?'

Steve Taylor shows that Christians can make good films. The movie makes you think, which is a good thing. The film is not a cliché story with a thin script. The story is well structured in clear chapters. The acting and directing are excellent. At the end of the film I actually wanted watch the DVD again.

Le Havre (2011)

Dit is pas de eerste kennismaking voor mij met de Finse regisseur Aki Kaurismäki. Dit terwijl een aantal van zijn films al aardig wat aandacht kreeg tijdens het prestigieuze filmfestival in Cannes. Zijn meest erkende film The Man Without a Past won daar zelfs de Grand Prix in 2002 en was genomineerd voor een Academy Award.

Marcel Marx is een voormalig schrijver die zijn droom inmiddels heeft opgegeven. Hij leidt een teruggetrokken leven met zijn vrouw Arletty in de Franse havenstad Le Havre. Hij verdient de kost als schoenenpoetser op een metrostation.
Op een dag ontmoet Marcel de Afrikaanse minderjarige allochtone vluchteling Idrissa. De jongen probeert bij zijn familie in Londen te komen, maar wordt gezocht door de politie.
Marcel weet zijn vrienden en buurtgenoten te mobiliseren om de jongen alsnog te helpen om het kanaal te oversteken.

Regisseur Aki Kaurismäki is duidelijk beïnvloed door filmmakers als Rainer Werner Fassbinder en Robert Bresson. Zowel zijn filmstijl als acteerstijl zijn eenvoudig om zo zijn boodschap duidelijk over te brengen. Le Havre is een prima film, helaas ontbreekt het aan originaliteit en misschien wel creativiteit.

This is only the first encounter for me with the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. This while some of his films have received quite a lot of attention at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. His most recognized film The Man Without a Past even won the Grand Prix in 2002 and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Marcel Marx is a former writer who has given up his ambition. He leads a reclusive life with his wife Arletty in the French port of Le Havre. He earns his living as a shoeshiner at the subway station.
One day Marcel meets an underaged African illegal immigrant named Idrissa. The boy tries to get to his family in London, but is unable because the police are searching for him. Marcel mobilizes his friends and neighbors to help the boy crossing the channel.

Director Aki Kaurismäki is clearly influenced by filmmakers such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Robert Bresson. Both his film style and acting style are simple to get his message across clearly. Le Havre is an ok film, sadly lacking in originality and perhaps even creativity.

The Bridge - Bron / Broen (2011, TV Show)

Na het succes van The Killing, Borgen, Wallander, maar ook de film reeks in de Millenium Trilogy mogen we wel stellen de beste Misdaad series van de laatste paar jaar uit Scandinavië komen. In 2011 kwam er zelfs een remake van The Killing, die door AMC in Amerika werd uitgezonden. Genoeg reden dus om de serie The Bridge te bespreken.

Rond middennacht wordt er een storing gemeld op de Öresundsbrug, de brug die Denemarken met Zweden verbind. Al snel blijkt dat deze storing het begin is van een plan van een psychopaat. Deze heeft tijdens dit moment een lijk op de brug gelegd. Precies op de grens. De Zweedse en Deense politie zijn hierdoor genoodzaakt om met elkaar samen te werken. Niet alleen taal en wetgeving speelt is hierbij een barrière, maar meer nog de karakters. Dat blijkt al uit de eerste ontmoeting tussen de Deense ietwat nonchalante rechercheur Martin Rohde en de enigszins contactgestoorde bijna autistisch lijkende Saga Norén. Dit levert niet alleen bizarre gesprekken tussen de twee op, maar zorgt ook voor de nodige humor in de serie. Al snel blijkt dat dit slechts het begin is van een reeks misdaden die de moordenaar gepland heeft. Hij wil met zijn moorden aandacht vragen voor vijf belangrijke maatschappelijke problemen.

De serie is prachtig opgebouwd in 10 afleveringen die stuk voor stuk sterk te noemen zijn. We volgen in de serie verschillende verhaallijnen die subtiel zijn uitgezet. Het is niet altijd duidelijk waar deze lijnen toe leiden en wat het belang ervan is voor het verhaal. Dit is echter ook haar sterke kant. Met The Killing werd de lat voor misdaadseries al hoog gelegd. The Bridge weet dit niveau zeker te evenaren. The Bridge is dan ook een must voor liefhebbers van het Genre.

After the success of The Killing, Borgen, Wallander, but also the Millennium Trilogy film series , we must say the best crime series of the last few years are from Scandinavia. In 2011 there even was a remake of The Killing, which was broadcast in the US by AMC. Enough reason to discuss the tv-show The Bridge.

Around midnight, a malfunction is reported on Öresundsbrug the bridge that connects Denmark with Sweden. It soon becomes apparent that this malfunction is the beginning of a plan of a psychopath. This one has used this moment a plant a body on the bridge. It is right on the border between Sweden and Denmark. The Swedish and Danish police therefore are forced to cooperate with each other. Not only is language and legislation a barrier, but also the huge difference in characters. This is already evident from the first meeting between the Danish detective Martin Rohde a somewhat nonchalant and Saga Norén who seems to have a sort of developmental disorder almost autistic-like. This results in bizarre conversations between the two, but also provides some humor in the series. It soon becomes apparent that this is only the beginning of a series of crimes that the killer has planned. He wants his murders to draw attention to five important social problems.

The series are beautifully built into 10 episodes each of them are strong. We subtly follow different storylines in the series. It is not always clear which of these lines lead to something and what their importance are for the story. This however is also its strong side. The Killing set the bar very high for all crime series. The Bridge certainly seems to reach this level. The Bridge is a must for fans of the genre.

Carnage (2011)

Er is al veel gezegd over de persoon Roman Polanski. Aan de ene kant is hij een fantastisch regisseur en aan de andere kant blijft er toch altijd die zwarte bladzijde uit zijn verleden. De bladzijde uit 1977 die hem nog altijd achtervolgt. Sommige van zijn films zijn nog altijd klassiekers (Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby en The Pianist). Een nieuwe film van Polanski is vrijwel altijd de moeite waard om te bekijken, zo ook de film Carnage.

Carnage is gebaseerd op het toneelstuk God of Carnage van Yasmina Reza die samen met Polanski ook het scenario schreef. Het verhaal gaat over twee echtparen die elkaar ontmoeten na een uit de hand gelopen ruzie tussen hun beide zonen. Ze proberen elkaar ervan te overtuigen dat het belangrijk is dat de beide zoons er samen als volwassenen uit komen en leren de consequenties van hun handelen onder ogen te zien.
Al snel blijkt dat er concrete verschillen zijn in de opvoeding van beide jongens en dat een gemakkelijke oplossing soms verder lijkt dan ooit.
Roman Polanski heeft een prachtige klein drama afgeleverd. De dialogen zijn ijzersterk en het acteerwerk is van zeer hoge klasse. Dit is ook waar de film compleet op gegrondvest is. De meningsverschillen verschuiven heel subtiel waardoor we met de minuut de karakters beter leren kennen. De spanning stijgt en de relaties worden tot op het scherpst van de snede uitgesproken.
Polanski laat zien met deze film dat je niet veel nodig hebt om een goede film af te leveren.

Much has been said about the person Roman Polanski. On one hand he is a fantastic director and on the other hand, there always remains that dark chapter from his past. The page from 1977 that still haunts him. Some of his films are still classics (Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby and The Pianist). A new film by Polanski movie is moslty worthwhile seeing and so is Carnage.

Carnage is based on the play "God of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza who also wrote the screenplay together with Polanski. The story is about two couples who meet after a fight between their two sons. They try to convince each other that it is important that the two sons settle this as adults and learn to face the consequences of their actions. It soon becomes apparent that there are real differences in the education of both boys and that an easy solution sometimes seems very far.

Roman Polanski has delivered a beautiful small drama. The dialogues are very strong and the acting is top of the bill. This is also one of the main pillars the film is based upon. The arguments shift very subtle. Every minute we get to know the characters better through the arguments. They almost seem to reach a boiling point. The relationships of both parents are about to explode.
Polanski shows that with this film is not much need to make a good film to deliver.

50/50 (2011)

Bepaalde onderwerpen zijn altijd lastig om komedies over te maken. Het onderwerp van deze film, kanker, is een dergelijk onderwerp. Debuterend scenarist Will Reiser is hierin aardig geslaagd. Het is een mooie luchtige benadering van dit serieuze onderwerp.

De 27-jarige Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) heeft een perfect leven. Hij heeft een mooie vriendin, een leuke baan als schijver voor radio programma's en met Kyle (Seth Rogen) een hele goede vriend. Maar als Adam last krijgt van zijn rug, ontdekt hij dat hij een zeldzame en mogelijk fatale vorm van kanker heeft. Zijn zorgeloze leven veranderd van de ene dag op de andere in een drama. Zijn leven van uitgaan, sporten, etc veranderd ineens in een leven van chemotherapie en therapiesessies van zijn veel te jonge en altijd optimistische therapeut. En het wordt alleen maar erger wanneer blijkt dat zijn vriendin hem bedriegt. Gelukkig blijft zijn beste vriend Kyle hem steunen door alles heen.

50/50 is een geslaagde film over een moeilijk onderwerp. Het heeft de brug weten te slaan tussen komedie en drama zonder disrespectvol te zijn, mede door het acteerwerk van Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Het is een grappig, ontroerend en origineel verhaal over vriendschap, liefde en overleven. De rol van Seth Rogen is ook een vrolijke noot en een mooie toevoeging voor de film. Al met al een prima film.

Certain subjects are always difficult to make fun about. The subject of this movie, cancer, is such a subject. Debuting screenwriter Will Reiser succeeded quite well in creating a script for this movie. It has a beautiful airy approach to this serious subject.

The 27-year-old Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has a perfect life. He has a beautiful girlfriend, a great job as a writer for radio programs and has the best friend he could ever wish for, Kyle (Seth Rogen). But when Adam's back continues to hurt, he discovers that he has a rare and potentially fatal form of cancer. His life changes from one day to another into a drama. His life of entertainment, sports, etc suddenly becomes a life of chemotherapy and therapy sessions by the far too young and always optimistic therapist katherine. And it only gets worse when it appears that his girlfriend is cheating on him. Fortunately, his best friend Kyle to support him through everything.

50/50 is a successful film about a difficult subject. It has managed to bridge the gap between comedy and drama without being disrespectful, partly because of the acting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is a funny, touching and original story about friendship, love and survival. The role of Seth Rogen is a cheerful note and a nice addition for the movie. All in all a good movie.
